قَدindeed أَقبَلَhas come الشَيخُthe old man عَلىon الحِمارِthe donkey
The old man has come riding the donkey,
Like Abu Yasara al-Fazari.

وَلَيلَةٍand a night كَرّتreturned عَلىَupon نَهارِa day
Through the passing of age upon age,
And night returning upon day,

خالٍdevoid مِنَof الدرهَمِthe dirham وَالدينارِand the dinar
I have known him like a spiny-tailed lizard in its burrow,
Bereft of dirham and dinar,
إِلّاexcept الَّذيthat which تَراهyou see it مِنof أَطمارِrags

Save the rags you see,
Or a very old woman in the house,

From whom the ghoul seeks refuge in flight.
He supports her by tending the trees,

And they ask God in the hours before dawn,
For whoever aids the old man with his excuses,

For happiness in this world and in the final abode.
