أحنِI yearn لَكُمfor you عَلىdespite شَطِّthe remoteness of المَزارِthe place of visitation
وَأَجعَلُand I make ذِكرَكُمremembrance of you نَقلَdelicacies served with wine العُقارِwine
I yearn for you, despite the remoteness of your abode,
And make remembrance of you the delicacies served with wine.
وَأَهواكُمand I love you وَإِنand even if زَعَمواthey claim بِأَنّيthat I
سَلَوتُI ceased to pine أَبعَدَafter...? ماthat عيلَwas exhausted اِصطِباريmy patience
And I love you, even if they claim that I
Have ceased to pine—after my patience has failed?
أَياO قَمَريmy moon أَتَذكُرdo you remember حينَwhen كُنّاwe were
نَبيتُwe spend the night مَعَwith المَسَرَّةِjoy فيin إِزارِa wrap
O my moon, do you remember when we
Would spend the night with joy in a single wrap?
وَتَذكُرand do you remember حالَناour state وَالدَهرُwhile Time عَبدٌa slave
وَزَندُand the firestick of الأُنسِintimacy وَالإِسعافِand fulfillment of wishes وارِsparking
And do you recall our state, with Time a slave,
And the firestick of intimacy and fulfillment sparking,
إِذwhen الأَيامُthe days مُشرِقَةٌradiant سُروراًwith joy
وَبَدرُand the full moon of السَعدِgood fortune فازَtriumphed عَلىover السِرارِthe moonless nights
When the days were radiant with joy,
And fortune’s full moon triumphed over moonless nights?
فَمُذbut since قُلِبَwas turned المِجنّthe shield وَنافَسَتنيand competed with me
عُيونٌeyes فيكَfor you تَرغَبُyearning فيin اِنكِسارِhumble submission
But since the shield was turned and I faced rivals—
Eyes yearning for you in humble submission—
أَطَعتَyou obeyed حَواسِدىthose envious of me وَأَضَعتَand you squandered وِدّيmy love
وَنازَعتَand you strained against الأَعِنَّةَthe reins فيin نِفاريfleeing from me
You have heeded my enviers and squandered my love,
And strained against the reins to flee from me.
فَواso alas for أَسَفيmy sorrow وَواظَمَئيand alas for my thirst وَلَهفيand my longing
لِريِّfor slaking النَفسِthe soul مِنfrom بيرBir (well) الحِجارِal-Hijar (the stones)
So alas for my sorrow, alas for my thirst and longing
To slake my soul from Bir al-Hijar!
رباعُabodes of صَبابَتيmy ardent longing وَرَبيعُand the springtime of أُنسيmy joy
بِهِof it كَلفَتbecame enamored نفسa soul بِلاwithout سَبقٍprior اِختيارِchoice
The haunts of my passion and the springtime of my joy;
My soul grew enamored of it, without prior choice.
وَكَمand how many فيon الأَرضِthe earth مِنof حَسَنٍa beautiful one وَلَكِنand yet

And how many beauties there are on earth! Yet
On it, to my misfortune, my choice fell.
