Good fortune speaks, and virtues bear witness

that Ahmad is the one sustained by care.

The lion of the emirate, its full moon journeying by night, and one

whose honor is renewed every day.

A glory beneath which the radiant, piercing stars appear,

and a keenness of mind that made the star Farqad jealous.

The protector, noble-hearted and valiant, who holds

a share in high honors, wisdom, and lordship.

Behold Tunis: it knows, with you as its emir,

that had you not been there, even hard rock would have melted.

You clothed its people in splendor and protected them,

and robed them there in a pride that cannot be denied.

You kept vigil until you established them among mankind,

and granted them honor there that never runs out.

We always see you striving to exalt them,

while others sit in the lap of idleness.

For you—by the Qur'an—are a blessing among them,

and against the foes, by God, you are a sword of Indian steel.

Who is like my lord the emir, with his striving

to establish his glory firmly and make it everlasting?

He gathered the troops for jihad and commanded them,

and rose with them to glory, himself without equal.

His sole concern is attending to their affairs

and striving to train them so that they follow the right course.

Thus good fortune granted him [success] through their training,

in so brief a time that its like has never been known.

And whoever you favor with special care

spends the night bound fast to perfection.

You find it like a necklace, securely strung,

    with lions, each flashing lightning or thundering;

or like the Milky Way in multitude and glitter,

or like deaths brought on by deaths.

And you see the horsemen, the sharp swords, and the spears

prostrating themselves at every moment before your lofty glory.

And you see the cannons, around each a defender,

a lover swaying to their melodies.

    Like gaping serpents, wide open

are their mouths, as though they were sighing.

    And so on: towering buildings

and great works openly bearing witness to excellence.

O lord, whenever one beholds your majesty,

one knows and understands what one has seen, and gives praise.

May you have joy in this regiment and its splendor,

and may joy come to us and all who profess the faith.

And may you continue, at every moment, to create a source of pride

whose equal is found in no land,

O joy of the days, O sun of mankind,

O peerless one in loftiness, you who are the lord,

until we see you attain what you hoped for

throughout the worlds, as you wish, and more fortunate still.
