خَلائِفَcaliphs جاءَتcame بَعدَafter هَذاthis المُعَظَّمِexalted one
And Muhammad al-Tatawini has added
Muhammad al-Tawani has ascribed
caliphs who came after this exalted one.
Successors who came after this exalted one
فَقالَso he said وَلَمand did not يَلحَقreach بِقَولِهِwith his words شأوَthe stature of مَنone who

So he spoke, yet his words did not reach the stature of one
Saying, his words about them contained no ill,
whose verse about them is like strung pearls.
Like well-arranged pearls on a string
أَتىcame بَعدَهُafter him عَبدُAbd (servant of) العَزيزal-Aziz (the Mighty) وَياand oh! لَهُfor him

After him came Abd al-Aziz—and what an
After him came Abdel Aziz - what a leader!
imam he was, winning through might the distinction of preeminence!
The imam who excelled in honor and precedent
أَتىcame to قُبَّةَthe dome of الإِسلامIslam وَهيَwhile it was عَلىon شَفاthe brink
يَقولُhe says أَياO داراًa dwelling لِمَيَّةof Mayya فاِسلَمِso remain safe
He came to Islam's dome while it stood on the brink,
He came to the dome of Islam while it was on the brink
saying, 'O dwelling of Mayya, remain safe!'
Saying "O house of Mayya, submit!"
بَداemerged أَمرُهُhis rule مِنfrom حَيثُwhere ماlinking particle كانَhad صنوهُhis brother

His reign arose where his brother
His command emerged from where it had been preserved
had left off, with prudence and resolve—know this.
To him it came with resolve and determination, know
أَعَدَّhe prepared مِنَsome of الأَجنادِthe troops وَالعُدَدِand armaments الَّتيwhich

He readied troops and armaments through which
He prepared armies and equipment with which
the Russians gulped down cups of bitter colocynth.
The Russians would drink bitter poison
وَلَكِنbut لأمرٍfor a purpose شاءَهُwilled it اللَهُGod خَلقَهُHis creatures

سَرىtraveled by night لَهُto him فيin جُنحٍa stretch مِنَof اللَيلِthe night مُظلِمِdark
But for a purpose God had willed, His creatures
But by God's will which created it
came to him in a dark stretch of night.
Fate flowed to him on dark wings of night
فَساقوهُthen they drove him سَوقاًa driving وَالسَماءُwhile the sky تَجودُهُdrenched him

Then they drove him along, while the sky drenched him,
So they took him away forcibly while the sky mourned him
with rainclouds pouring, and eye sockets streaming blood.
And blood flowed from Minhal and stones
وَقامَand arose مُرادُMurad (the desired one) الخَلقِthe people بَعدَهُafter him لِلَّتيto that which
مَرامُهاits pursuit شأنُthe concern of كُلّevery خِرقٍman of mettle مُعَمَّمِturbaned
And Murad, the people's desire, rose after him to that station
After him came Murad, for whom
whose pursuit concerns every turbaned man of mettle.
The goal was the way of every veiled fanatic
وَلَكِنbut مُرادُthe will of الحَقِّthe True One بَيَّنَrevealed عَجزَهُhis incapacity
فَعوضَso He compensated مِنin the person of عَبدِAbd (servant of) الحَميدِal-Hamid (the Praiseworthy) بِضَيغَمwith a lion
But the True One's will revealed his incapacity,
But the will of Truth showed his incapacity
so He replaced him with Abd al-Hamid, a lion—
And replaced him with Abdelhamid Digham
بِلَيثٍwith a lion هَصورٍfierce لاnot يُباليcares بِمَنabout whoever عَداrushes
حَوالَيهِaround him مِنfrom among ذِئبٍa wolf وَكَلبٍand a dog مُذَمَّمِreviled
a fierce lion, heedless of whoever rushes
With a snarling lion who cared not
around him, be it wolf or reviled dog.
For the wolves and dogs surrounding him
فَوَجَّهَso he turned نَحوَtoward الروسِthe Russians وَجهَthe face of اِهتمامِهِhis attention
يَجُرُّdrawing along خَضَمّاًa vast sea مِنof خَميسٍan army عَرَمرَمِimmense
So he turned the face of his attention toward the Russians,
He turned his attention to face the Russians
drawing along an ocean of a mighty army.
Dragging a fierce, unsheathed sword
وَلَكِنbut لٍسوءِbecause of ill الحَظِّfortune خانَتbetrayed ثَقاتُهُhis trusted men

فَأَصبَحَso became صُلحُpeace with الروسِthe Russians أَجزَلَthe richest مَغنَمِgain
But, through ill fortune, his trusted men betrayed him,
But by ill fate, those he trusted betrayed him
so peace with the Russians became the richest prize.
And the Russian peace became a great prize
وَياand oh! رُبّmany a صُلحٍpeace هوَit is لِلحَربfor war عُدّةٌprovision

And many a peace is provision for war,
By God, that peace was preparation for war
just as one harboring rancor was beguiled by an outward smile.
As the scornful are deceived by a smiling face
لأَمرٍfor a purpose قَصيرٌQasir ماemphatic particle تَعَمَّدَdeliberately undertook جَدعَهcutting it off

لأنفٍof a nose أَشَمَّproudly high-bridged لاnot يُسامُis subjected بِمَرغَمto the dust
For some purpose Qasir deliberately undertook the severing
For a trivial reason he severed ties
of a proud nose that would not be humbled in the dust.
With a proud nose too lofty to be led
بِهِby it اِستَعزَلَousted الزباءَal-Zabba وَهيَthough she was أَعَزّmightier مِنthan

With it he ousted al-Zabba, though she was mightier than
He isolated himself from the glorious ones
the mightiest of the mighty who ever laid claim to might.
More glorious than any honorable man

Then a ring's stone made her drink the cup of death,
He made them drink the cup of humiliation
nor did tapping her tooth in remorse avail her.
No banging on the teeth of regret helped them
كَذاكَlikewise نَرىwe shall see الروسيthe Russian إِنif شاءَwills رَبُّناour Lord

يَخِرّfall down صَريعاًstricken لِليَدَينِonto both hands وَلِلفَمِand onto the mouth
Likewise we shall see the Russian, if our Lord wills,
So we hope, if our Lord wills
fall stricken upon his hands and mouth.
The Russian will fall, slain by hands and mouths
