مُصابٌa calamity أَطارَdrove away النَومَsleep عَنfrom ساحَةthe precinct الجَفنِthe eyelid
فَجادَso it poured forth بِماwith what يُغنيsuffices عَلىover صَيِّبِthe downpour المُزنِthe rain clouds
A calamity drove sleep from the precinct of the eyelid,
Stricken with sleeplessness, he dispelled drowsiness from the plains of his eyelids,
so it poured forth enough to outdo the clouds’ downpour.
So he was generous with enough to entertain the lovesick lad.
أَفاقَawoke بِهِthrough it مَنwhoever كانَwas مِنfrom قَبلُbefore غافِلاًheedless
وَحَيَّرَand bewildered مِنّاamong us ذاone possessing سنانٍa spearhead وَذاand one possessing سِنِّyears of age
Through it, whoever had been heedless before awoke,
He awakened those who were formerly heedless,
and it bewildered among us the spear-bearer and the man of years.
And perplexed those with fangs and those with teeth.
وَلِمand why لاnot وَفيand in فَقدِthe loss of الأَحِبَّةِloved ones واعِظٌan admonisher
لشمَنfor whoever (apparently لِمَن) كانَwas ذاpossessing قَلبٍa heart وَمَنand whoever كانَwas ذاpossessing أُذنِan ear
And why not? In the loss of loved ones there is an admonisher
Why is there no preacher for the loss of loved ones
for whoever has a heart, and whoever has an ear.
For those with a heart or those with ears?
فَبُشراكَso glad tidings to you ياO مضنone who (apparently مَن) قَدَّمَsent ahead الزادَthe provisions لِلسرىfor the night journey
وَزادَand added عَلىto تَقديمِهِhis sending ahead حَسَنَgood الظَنِّexpectation
So glad tidings to you, O one who sent provisions ahead for the night journey,
Good tidings to you, O Mudhn, you who provided provisions for the journey
and supplemented his sending them ahead with good hope,
And increased, over your provisions, good assumptions.
كَهَذاlike this ضَجيعِbedfellow of اللَحدِthe grave-niche حَمّودَةَHammuda الرضىal-Rida

like this bedfellow of the grave, Hammuda al-Rida,
Just like this resident of the grave, pleased and content,
great in virtues, the keen-witted Abu Sinn.
The elderly, glorious, dignified Abu Sinn.
لَقَدindeed كانَhe was أَيمُI swear by اللَهِGod بَرّاrighteous وَخَيِّراًand benevolent
وَذاand possessing خُلُقٍa character أَبهىmore radiant مِنَthan الزَهرِthe blossoms فيon الغُصنِthe branch
He was indeed—by God—righteous and benevolent,
He was, by God, righteous and benevolent,
and possessed a character more radiant than blossoms on the branch.
With a character more beautiful than the flowers on a branch.
كَأَنّيas though I بِهِwith him ياah قَدسَmay sanctify اللَهُGod روحَهُhis soul
يَروحُroams بِهاwith it مِنfrom رَوضِthe garden of فَنٍan art إِلىَto فَنِّanother art
I seem to see him—ah, may God sanctify his soul—
It was as if, O may God sanctify his soul,
roaming with it from the garden of one art to another.
It migrated with it from a meadow to a meadow.
وَكانَand he was مِنَamong الكُتّابِthe scribes شَطراًa part يَوَدّهُمhe cherished them

وَصَدراًand a leader وَجيهاًeminent ناسِكاًdevout مُشعِرَmarking for sacrifice البُدنِthe sacrificial camels
And he was one of the scribes, a member who cherished them,
He was among the writers, a section they loved,
and an eminent leader, devout, marking the sacrificial camels.
An honorable, ascetic, and eloquent man.
إِلَهيmy God تَقَبَّلaccept سَعيَهُhis striving وَأَجزِand reward بِماwith what
وَعَدتَYou promised بِهِwith it ياO واسِعَboundless in الفَضلِgrace وَالمَنِand bounty
My God, accept his striving and reward him with what
My God, accept his efforts and reward him with what
You promised, O You of boundless grace and bounty.
You have promised, O Most Generous and Bestower.

And make true, my God, the words of a friend recording the date:
And make true, my God, the words of a departed chronicler,
“To the Garden of Paradise Abu Sinn has passed.”
"To the Gardens of Paradise passed Abu Sinn."
