Will you forsake a beautiful woman, or visit her?
Do you shun a singing girl or blame her?
Or is your bond with her weak and severed?
Or has the rope of love for her unraveled?

Or is patience wiser? For a man
Or has patience proved better, for surely a man
will benefit from his knowledge, if he knows.
Will benefit from his knowledge if he has knowledge,

Just as a mature man whom you will find
who sees clearly, then refrains or advances.
Who has investigated then attained or walked ahead.

and suspected every adviser who counseled him.
And suspected every sincere adviser to him.

And the punishment of a sinful man.

So there appeared in my chest a split, for her
like a crack in glass that will not mend.
Like the split of a glass vessel not to be repaired.

And the nearest place of visitation for her was to be had?

your blood-foe did not remain in their home.
Did not settle, as the flood circulated the rolling pebbles.

أَفيis it in الطَوفِwandering خِفتِyou feared عَلَيَّfor me الرَدىdeath
وَكَمand how many مِنa رَدٍone who perished أَهلَهُhis family لَمdid not يَرِمhe leave
'Was it in my wandering that you feared death for me?
"Then Najran, then the villages of Kinda,
How many have died without leaving their people!
Then which purpose did it have I did not toss about for?"
وَقَدand indeed طُفتُI roamed لِلمالِfor wealth آفاقَهُits horizons
عُمانَOman فَحِمصَthen Homs فَأوريشَلِمthen Urishalim
I have roamed its horizons in pursuit of wealth:
"And after that to Hadhramaut
Oman, then Homs, then Urishalim.
So I fulfilled my concern, and time I was anxious."
أَتَيتُI came to النَجاشِيَّthe Negus فيin أَرضِهِhis land
وَأَرضَand the land of النَبيطِthe Nabataeans وَأَرضَand the land of العَجَمthe Persians
I came to the Negus in his land,
"Do you not see Hadhra when its inhabitants
and the lands of the Nabataeans and the Persians,
With bliss - and does one provided for last?"
فَنَجرانَthen Najran فَالسَروَthen al-Sarw مِنof حِميَرٍHimyar
فَأَيَّso what مَرامٍgoal لَهُfor it لَمdid not أَرُمI pursue
then Najran, then al-Sarw of Himyar:
"Shahpur the Jund stayed in it two years
what goal of wealth did I not pursue?
Striding about in it, steps treading."
وَمِنand from بَعدِafter ذاكَthat إِلىto حَضرَمَوتَHadramawt
فَأَوفَيتُthen I fulfilled هَمّيmy purpose وَحيناًand at times أَهُمI aspire
And after that, to Hadramawt,
"So his Lord did not increase him in strength
fulfilling my purpose, and at times still aspiring.
And the like of his neighbor did not endure."
أَلَمhave you not تَرَيِseen الحَضرَal-Hadr إِذwhen أَهلُهُits people
بِنُعمىin abundance وَهَلand is خالِدٌimmortal مَنone who نَعِمprospered
Have you not seen al-Hadr, when its people
"So when his Lord saw his deed
lived in abundance? Is anyone who prospers immortal?
He came upon him suddenly and did not avenge."
أَقامَstationed بِهِthere شاهَبورُShahbur الجُنوthe troops (continued)
دَ(completes 'troops') حَولَينِfor two years يَضرِبُpressing فيهِin it القُدُمforward
Shahbur stationed the troops there
"And he had called his comrades with a call
for two years, pressing ever onward.
Come now to your matter, it is decided."
فَماso not زادَهُadded to it رَبُّهُits lord قُوَّةًstrength
وَمِثلُand like مُجاوِرِهِhis neighbor لَمdid not يُقِمremain
Its lord added no strength to it,
"So die honorable by your swords
nor did he endure like his neighbor.
And for death one with daring gulps it down."
فَلَمّاthen when رَأىsaw رَبُّهُits lord فِعلَهُhis action
أَتاهُhe came to him طُروقاًby night فَلَمbut did not يَنتَقِمtake revenge
When its lord saw what he had done,
"And for death there is better for one who attains it
he came to him by night, but took no revenge.
When the man - his nation does not last."
وَكانَand he had دَعاsummoned رَهطَهُhis kinsmen دَعوَةًwith a call
هَلُمَّcome إِلىto أَمرِكُمyour cause قَدalready صُرِمhas been cut short
He had summoned his kinsmen with a call:
"So in that is an example for one who would die with dignity
'Come to your cause—it has been cut short.
And Ma'rib whose dam the torrent split."
فَموتواso die كِراماًnobly بِأَسيافِكُمby your swords
وَلِلمَوتِand as for death يَجشَمُهُbears its hardship مَنwhoever جَشِمbears hardship
Die nobly by your swords,
"Its stones built by them the villages
for death is a hardship borne by whoever bears it.
When their water came it did not flow gently."
وَلِلمَوتِand death خَيرٌis better لِمَنfor whoever نالَهُit reaches
إِذاwhen المَرءُa man أُمَّتُهُhis good estate لَمdoes not تَدُمendure
Death is better for the man it reaches,
"So it watered the crops and its grapes
when a man's good estate no longer lasts.'
With ample water when it was divided."
فَفيand in ذاكَthat لِلمُؤتَسِيfor one seeking comfort أُسوَةٌan example
وَمَأرِبُand Marib قَفّىcame down عَلَيهاupon it العَرِمthe torrent
In that is an example for one who would take comfort,
"So they lived in bliss
and Marib, overrun by the torrent:
Then a torrent coursed through it eroding."
رُخامٌmarble بَنَتهُbuilt it لَهُمfor them حِميَرٌHimyar
إِذاwhen جاءَهُreached it ماؤهُمtheir water لَمdid not يَرِمdepart
a marble dam that Himyar built for them,
"So the villages and its canals flew off
when their water reached it, it did not leave,
In Yahma in which is a mirage that promises."
فَأَروىthen irrigated الزُروعَthe crops وَأَعنابَهاand their grapevines
عَلىin سَعَةٍabundance ماؤهُمtheir water إِذwhen قُسِمwas divided
and watered the crops and their vines,
"So they flew quickly, and they could not estimate
their water abundant when apportioned.
From it enough for a weaned child to drink."
فَعاشواso they lived بِذَلِكَby that فيin غِبطَةٍhappy prosperity
فَجارَthen dealt harshly بِهِمwith them جارِفٌa sweeping flood مُنهَزِمbursting forth
Thus they lived in glad prosperity,
until a bursting torrent swept them away.
فَطارَthen fled القُيولُthe rulers وَقَيلاتُهاand their queens
بِيَهماءَinto a trackless desert فيهاin it سَرابٌa mirage يَطِمsurges
The rulers and their queens took flight
into a trackless waste where mirage surged high.
فَطارواso they fled سِراعاًswiftly وَماand not يَقدِروthey can (continued)

They fled in haste, unable
to draw from it even a weaned child's drink.
