في-try بَعدَafter المَشيبِgray hair كَفىenough ذاكَthat عاراas shame
And what am I, to claim these verses
after gray hair? That would be shame enough.
وَقَيَّدَنيand bound me الشِعرُpoetry فيwithin بَيتِهِits house
كَماas قَيَّدَbound الآسِراتُcaptors الحِماراa wild ass
Poetry has bound me within its house
as captors bind a wild ass.

فَكَفَّthen cease الرَواعِدُthe thunderclouds عَنهاfrom it القِطاراtheir rain
When the land and its landmarks hide you,
the thunderclouds will cease their rain upon it.
