O ʿAlqam, events have brought me
to you, and I had nowhere to retreat.

وَوَرَّثَكُمand bequeathed to you مَجدَهُhis glory الأَحوَصُal-Aḥwaṣ
ʿUlātha clothed you in his robes,
and al-Aḥwaṣ bequeathed his glory to you.

And every people, though they have stallions,
wag their tails when they behold your stallion.
وَإِنand if فَحَصَsearch الناسُpeople عَنfor سَيِّدٍa chief

And if people search for a chief,
then your chief needs no searching out.
فَهَلso can تُنكَرُgo unrecognized الشَمسُthe sun فيin ضَوئهاits light
أَوِor القَمَرُthe moon الباهِرُdazzling المُبرِصُshining white
So can the sun go unrecognized in its light,
or the dazzling moon, gleaming white?
فَهَبso forgive ليfor me ذُنوبيmy sins فَدَتكَmay they ransom you النُفوسُsouls
وَلاand never زِلتَmay you cease تَنميgrowing وَلاand never تَنقُصُmay you diminish
So forgive me my sins—may souls ransom you—
and may you never cease to grow, nor ever diminish.
