Sumayya saddled her camels at daybreak,

angry with you—what do you think has come over her?

    ما بالُها بِاللَيلِ زالَ زَوالُها

    Today something of her disquiet has dawned on her;

what ailed her at night? May she vanish utterly!

Foolishly! Sumayya does not know—alas for her—

that many a fair woman's union I have severed.

And many a tract drenched by morning rain, as though its merchants

had spread their striped cloaks and baggage over it,

I have scouted by night; and many a wary man's ewe,

so warily watched, his eye scarcely left her unguarded.

I kept watching her, while he kept guarding her,

until I drew near, as darkness drew near her.

I shot while his eye was heedless of his ewe,

and struck her heart's core and her spleen.

    فَخَلَت لِصاحِبِ لَذَّةٍ وَخَلا لَها

    He guarded her by day, but spent the night heedless of her;

so she was alone with a seeker of pleasure, and he alone with her.

And many a bought wine, of what is aged in Babylon,

like the blood of a slaughtered beast—I stripped it of its crimson hue.

And many a rare, wise verse that comes before kings

I have spoken, so men would ask, “Who said it?”

And many a camel for the lot-casters I have summoned to its death,

and many a far reach of empty desert, where I feared losing my way—

a trackless, desolate waste—across whose breadth I raised

my gaze, to reckon the miles within it,

on a great, swift she-camel, as though beside her saddle-loop

were a cat, when the mounts wore their shadows as shoes.

By forced marches and noonday trotting, you see upon her

ankleted legs shedding their sandals along the road.

She was the last of four, and I chose her

when I approved her build along with her noble breeding.

I left her worn out after all her vigor,

and after riding her, no longer feared her rushing.

She reached Qays in the heart of his country,

coming to him beyond a wilderness; he bestowed bounty on her.

Whenever she passed beyond one tribe's tent-ropes,

she took up the next tribe's ropes on her way to you,

toward a blessed man, open in both hands,

who found his father on a height, and rose to it.

It was as though, for six months, she had encountered no

hardship, when she laid her coverings down beside you.

Indeed, I lodged with the best man ever to tread the pebbles—

Qays, who secured her sandal and its strap.

Not even the Nile, swelling with its flood,

favored by the east wind and flowing at its bidding,

foaming in Babylon, watering its people

abundantly, the Nabataeans channeling it through the land,

is ever more generous in gifts than he, when

the miser's soul scowls at its petitioners.

Giver of a hundred pure-white camels and their slave,

    newly calved, urging their young along behind them;

and the mature, swift-running horse, and every lofty mare

whose nape not even a tall man's hand can reach.

As though, in her shape, the wild-cattle herd were pursued by

a broad-rumped she-ghoul, feeding her brood on afterbirth,

hotly pursuing, bearing the young rider and sweeping him away,

until his spear entered the middle of their rumps.

You have accustomed Kinda to a practice; persevere in it:

forgive its foolish man, and keep its great buckets full.

    اِحمِل وَكُنتَ مُعاوِداً تَحمالَها

    Be for it a camel, docile of back;

carry its load, as you have carried it again and again.

And when some mighty calamity descends,

my family be your ransom—shield them from its burdens.

By the life of Him who made the months a sign,

a measured span, marking out their midpoint and their crescent,

you were no novice in oft-renewed war,

when its blazing heat kindled its great logs.

For Kinda, not with a shirker's efforts,

Qays strove, harming its enemy and building for it.

He held his choicest wealth cheap for its poor,

gave solace, mended relations among its people, and labored for it.

You do not absent yourself from its service, as did a man

who cared little for his clan, and so destroyed it.

You see the harm he deals his enemies,

and see, upon whoever receives his bounty,

a mark of goodness that adorns those who possess it,

like rain falling on a land and setting it flowing.

Shrewd: whenever his hands secure some booty,

he readies the mounts to win its like again,

with disheveled horses, their noble steeds forever

worn by repeated journeys, leaving their foals along the road.

Seeking a man of wealth, you sent them far afield,

and seeking kinship's union, whose moisture you have sprinkled.

So long were they led that you saw none following

the horses, whether haltered or running free.

Most often I heard them told, “Press on!”

Hard driving and swift trotting were their polish.

Until, when the guide waved his garment,

they were watered, and their water-bearers poured out the last dregs.

The servants tended the riding-camels; then they were dispersed

from him for a hoped-for venture, and he sent them wheeling.

You see their foremost steeds stirring a dust-cloud

like clouds, when you follow their squadrons,

    vying in their reins, grim-faced,

until at evening they bring back their spoils.

They struck a noble man; whoever they missed

did without water in summer, fearing the like of them.

And many a far-grazing herdsman's milch herd you seized, till it became

plunder; and many a hardship whose tether you severed.

Indeed, you have drawn a needy man into wealth,

while your raid struck prosperity and swept it away.

And when a massed battalion comes,

silent, overwhelming whoever bars its thirsty ranks,

its divisions gathering into a dark-green mass,

dreaded, whose combat the armored champions fear,

you were foremost, wearing no protective armor,

with your sword, openly marked out, striking its champions.

And you knew the soul would meet its death

as its Creator, the Sovereign, had decreed for it.
