إِذابِطنَةٌwhen satiety راجَعَتهُreturns to him سَكَنhe stays still
You did not strive in war like a man
And no man’s effort has encompassed war
who, when his belly is full again, sits still.
When a detested belly counsels him to settle.

You see his concern fixed on watching his waist;
You see his care is looking to his waist,
your concern is raiding, not growing fat.
While your care is for raiding, not for fatness.

Each year he has a raid
And every year he has a raid
that wears away the hind-hooves as a rasp scrapes.
That makes the enemies’ ribs quake, even the ships.

A grueling one, keeping the young man pulling
Tents that shade the horsemen on the banks
on the saddle's front bow, near his chin.
Of Wasit at the ridge of al-Dhakhn.

You see in it the old man, out of love for battle,
tremble like an aged camel lowing with longing.
Trembles like the honor-driven aroused one.

Then, when the men saw, in a moment,
So when the people saw in an instant
what their judgment discerned, he hid himself.
An opinion they could discern, they entrusted themselves.

There was nothing in what the eyes perceived
Not by what the eyes saw
of final despair, nor of certainty.
Of despair or certainty did they make their judgment.

galloping when the mirage hangs heavy.
At a run when the mirage quivers.

How wondrous the pledge is to the women who speak
So what a pledge for the saying
at the night's end: 'What has he hoarded?'
Of the last part of night! What was its purpose?

They came, making their way toward a man
And they came offering themselves to a man -
who, when he gains wealth, does not hoard it.
When he earns wealth he does not hoard it.

He may buy it most precious price.

He does not neglect praise or buy it
it, without quickly flagging or falling into indolence.
With reluctance or dawdling.

who lingered in battle until he dealt grievous wounds:
Who took his time in war until he was wounded.

Scale armor like bees which bend
a stave of sara wood with few knots;
For the rod of a steppe, little in spots.

and a smooth, straight spear like a long rope;
Bare and driving straight ahead like a torrent.

For it there is a leather bag above the abdomen.

This, then, is the praise; I am a man
So this is praise, and I am a man
who deliberately severed his tether to come to you.
Who has purposefully cut off from you the tie.

For a time I was a man in Iraq,
I was once a man in Iraq
upright in my lodging, long self-sufficient.
Of modest character, lengthy in singing.

Around me were Bakr and their allies,
Around me are virgins and their tribes,
and I was no easy prey for whoever threatened me.
And I am no easy prey for whoever promises me.

I was told of Qays, though I had not tested him,
And I was told of Qays, but did not attain him
that he was, as they claimed, the best of Yemen's people:
As they claimed, the best of the people of Yemen.

He splits through affairs and cuts his way through them
He divides affairs and scrutinizes them
as a tailor cuts a garment of radan cloth.
Like the cutting of the silk worker’s gown.

So I came to you seeking what they reported;
So I have come to you seeking what they told me,
but for what they reported, you would not have seen me.
And were it not for what they told me, I would not have seen you.

Do not deny me your ample generosity;
So do not deprive me of your abundant gifts,
I am a man who was never humiliated before you.
For I am a man, before you I have not been disgraced.
