For dwellings on the upland, the upland of al-Qalib,

water from my tear ducts poured like water from great buckets.

There Qutaylah failed to keep her tryst

with me, though she had never been false to a promise.

A gazelle among the gazelles of the valley of Khusaf,

mother of a fawn in the open country, not hand-reared.

I had charged her: “Do not heed

the slanderers’ talk about me, or their sowing of discord.”

And many a wilderness, like the back of a shield,

    I have crossed on a lean, loud-crying she-camel:

hardy and full-grown, swaggering with her rump,

striding headlong like a white, free-running thoroughbred.

She keeps pace with the lofty cavalcade through strength

and a towering, thickly heaped hump.

Her course set straight, she visits the sons of al-Harith,

men of song among the drinkers.

Gracious in granting protection, so no

neighbor of theirs is treacherously killed in their absence.

They feed others when the rain fails,

and the north wind blows, bringing frost.

And the clustered stars set rainless, so no

wild she-goat drinks from the south wind’s milking.

Whoever blames me for the sons of Hassan’s daughter,

I blame him and defy him in times of trouble.

Indeed Qays—Qays of noble deeds, Abu al-Ash'ath—

his enemies have fallen to Sha'ub, Death.

Every year he supplies me with a tireless steed

when the rein is slackened, or with a thoroughbred:

lean and broad-chested, you see him like a buck of the

autumn herbage, neither mixed-bred nor untrained.

The fetter’s rust is on his forelegs; he is never

neglected in his tightly secured tethering-place.

Light-footed when he sets out among the horses,

for swift running in varied gaits and cantering.

    هُنَّ صُفرٌ أَولادُها كَالزَبيبِ

    Those are my horses from him, and those my riding-camels;

they are yellow, their offspring like raisins.
