If there is no reliance on the beloved.

He tells the foolish man, when

Unripe fruit, and blossoms whose growth is lush.

I fell for her at al-Shaytayn; indeed,

Her love has burdened us and engrossed us.

    For she hunts men, yet

The wily marksman cannot catch her when he shoots.

She runs her toothstick with her fingertips over

    A dark-lipped, even-toothed mouth, like acacia tips.

She returns her bedmate's bent arm to

A plump forearm, its tattooing like scabbard-linings.

As though the taste of ginger and

Apples had settled on honey of the west wind.

He kept driving away from his tightly twisted rope—

    His heart sinking in fear—

Bees like al-Hafidah's little ones, much

Feared, with a buzzing din around the fire,

On a high, dark crag, enveloped in

Tawny smoke when people gather it.

Wine that has rested upon it by night and day.

Mounted by a male camel for mating.

Sturdy planks, with wheels beneath them,

In her is readiness when I set out on

An undertaking; in her are courage and forward mettle.

    A dusty-gray ridge-roamer, pursuing

    يَسعى بِها مُغاوِرٌ أَطحَل

    Behind him are collared, floppy-eared hounds;

A dusky, daring hunter runs with them.

    لَيسَ لَهُ مِمّا يُحانُ حِوَل

    Like a wolf, he never lets his quarry escape wounded;

For him there is no turning from what is doomed.

With terror and alarm overtaking him.

Not reckless when the battle rages, nor

    Poorly armed, deserting, or defenseless,

He thrusts at them sideways, in fury,

Bold, his face showing grim ferocity.
