Whose ruined dwelling lies on the slope—the slope of Waqir?

Its dwelling-place resembles the writing of a psalter.

It was ravaged, after those who had dwelt there,

by the long succession of winds and the passage of ages.

I say to Abd Allah, my heart pounding,

what I had said before him to Kathir:

So, whatever things I forget, I shall not forget a gathering

    that she and we shared on the slope below Thabir;

nor her words at night, when her upper chest was wetted

by rushing, copious tears that would not dry:

Are you the one I was told would be leaving

tomorrow morning, or setting out in the midday heat?

    وَما بَعضُ يَومٍ غِبتِه بِيَسِيرِ

    I said: A small matter—part of a day I shall be away;

yet part of a day you are away is no small matter.

Is it now, when I defied the reproachers to come to you,

and my commander tugged against my rope over my love for you,

and all my relatives rebuked me over you,

and my inmost self revealed what the heart conceals?

So I spoke to her as a man whom love had worn thin,

in need of her, however long time might last,

and concealing intense longing for her, while his heart

is captive to her, like one tightly bound.

And I cannot—whether my dwelling takes me far away or brings

me near—patiently bear being apart from you; know this.

    فَأَحبِب بِها مِن مُومِضٍ وَمُشِيرِ

    She pointed me out to her two companions and signaled with her eyes;

how lovely she was, with her eye-signals and gestures!

Then, when our night cleared and there appeared to us

the stars of a bright dawn after that,

they said: Go—may this not be our last time

meeting you beneath a concealing veil—may you be sheltered!

For we fear the clan may take alarm at us,

and that the eye of a keen-sighted enemy may see you.

They rose with heavy hips that made them sway,

then stretched upward with their necks and breasts,

like a bank-side bān-tree held firm by its roots,

its top stirred by a breath of the west wind.

Then, when they stood firmly on their feet, though they scarcely could,

with slender middles and delicate waists,

they passed calmly, with the swaying gait of the sands' antelopes,

over a sandy flat, its soft ground watered by successive rains.

They spent the spring in the lowlands, until there appeared

from the star, winds laden with scorching heat,

and it brought the waterfolk to Ghiyy [uncertain reading], while there called out

    a dove in a verdant grove, with its cooing;

Najd called them to settle, and she was reminded

of the shade of gardens and palaces there.

And there they were throughout the clan's whole summer,

beside a flock, amid meadow and pool.
