When a man is deprived of modesty, then he

Is apt to commit every foul deed.

He has brazenness in everything, and his secret

Is open to all; his two companions are obscenity and deceit.

He sees insults as praise and baseness as high standing,

And his hearing recoils from admonitions.

And modesty's face is clad in a skin of tenderness,

Hateful to him; what brings disgrace is plentiful.

So hold out hope for the young man while he lives, for he

Will reach the best of a penitent's states.
