O my people, how long this reproach,

And how I endure love, and how I shun

One who, if the heart were given its choice one day,

Thirsting, between him and a drink,

In a scorching wind whose heat almost sets the gar-

ment ablaze upon its wearer's skin,

Would be dearer to the heart and more desired

Than the bees' harvest mingled with rain from the clouds,

Woven by an east wind and a north wind's rain,

With no mote in it, at the heads of the ravines.

A towering presence barred the way to meeting him,

Fierce to encounter, with a smooth barrier.

And indeed I said, as I stood grieving,

While my tears were streaming swiftly:

O palace, with firm foundations and a gar-

den, loftiest of palaces among the low hills,

May God adorn you with flourishing from Him,

And may the Sovereign protect you from impending ruin.

Are you still true to the pledge, or have you changed in my absence?

Everything's fate is to pass away.

We once saw it, its people not yet gone,

Inhabited by them, with fertile grounds.

No—by the Lord of those proclaiming His greatness at Jamʿ,

And those who make their camels kneel after them at al-Ḥiṣāb,

The heart will not turn its love away from you,

Ever, unless the raven's color changes,

So long as unyielding al-Ṣālif stands, and

Red domes remain by the waters of al-ʿArjayn.
