O friend, what a wonder this is!

    Every affair has a cause.

    Sulayma's family have grown angry.

Why do you think they took offence?

We did nothing to anger them,

nor were they reviled in our presence.

    They sent their messenger,

    then searched and sought,

to find some fault in us,

    and traversed every land:

    where non-Arabs dwell, and where

    the Arabs make their home.

Only the severing of my ties—to vex me—

and my separation did they hasten,

when they undertook, as I judge

from their conduct, what they undertook.

    A talebearer among them kept

    lying until they parted.

Ulayy, what may tear apart one

    anguished by love—a lover—is falsehood.

Oh, if only our families, along a road,

    had never journeyed together!

    For they bequeathed me grief,

and my heart pounds within me.

Rather, would that I knew—and a young man

    is drawn toward his doom—

can a man be slain by one so gentle

    in coquetry, and henna-dyed,

tender, with downcast eyes, from whom

    the veils are never lifted?

Their upper body is like a bough, and rounded

    is what the coverings conceal.

They turn the eyes of a wild-cow calf,

over which a herd bends tenderly.

Their neck is a gazelle's neck,

and their mouth is cool and sweet.

It is as though their saliva were

    musk topped with white honey.

Mixed with it, from a mountain summit,

    is clear, abundant water,

pale and reddish-tinged; overnight there lay upon

it fine rain from a cloud.

The sun has never seen it, nor

    has algae clung to it.

Along with all the traits that

I describe, they have a richly tinged complexion,

like the leaves of the Qur'an, over which

    gold has been laid.
