My two dear friends, turn aside and greet Zaynab today.
My two friends bend your course and greet Zeinab today
And do not leave me, my two companions, and depart.
And do not forsake me, my companions, and go away

When we have fulfilled a lovesick soul’s longing
When we fulfill a wish of an ailing soul
for her, and the eye finds solace in love, then ride on.
And the eye attains the object of its desire, then ride

For if you both call me for the like of it
on an errand, rest assured you will not be reproached.
To a need, be assured, do not be blamed

I say to a slanderer who asked me while gloating,
I say to a fault-finder who asked me while gloating
who worked awhile to sever our bond and stirred up strife,
He tried to make strife between us for a while and brought about separation

questioning like a man who outwardly offers us counsel,
The question of a man who pretends to give us good advice
while hiding secret deceit within his counsel:
Yet hides malice amidst the advice

“Is Layla still true to her pledge?”—as though innocent, though it has become clear
On the pledge of Layla like an open desert that
to us—may God not guide him—what he had brought about.
Became clear to us, may God guide him to what he caused

He maligned me to her after I had thought that he—
Slanderers with her after I became estranged that
woe to him!—had desisted from wronging us.
Woe unto him from slander against us he struck

If Layla has been harsh to me and obeyed
in the end, the man who slandered me and lied,
The consequence from one who betrayed and lied

then she has driven away a soul tenderly concerned for her,
She has spurned a soul devoted to her
and a heart that, for her sake, defied a beloved, close companion.
And a heart that obeyed in her the beloved intimate

And the remainder of the connection with her became severed

With a blamer other than a custom of virtue upon her and a gloating

Witness around me present and absent

Still, I must say while the fault finder is a prattler
and the grief-stricken speak much when they voice reproach:
When he is grieved

And a time that has changed with her and alternated

Still within me is what she inspired of passion
and an illness that has baffled whoever tried to heal it,
And sickness which I grew weary of one who played the physician

So, Lord of the Throne, make my heart forget her for as long as I live;
The celestial throne was a comfort to the heart I lived remembering her
for I have so often spent my evenings courting her.
So I have longed for it since I loved being drawn to her
فَكَمfor how many مِنof مُشِتٍّone scattered قَدindeed جَمَعتَYou gathered بِقُدرَةٍby power
وَمُجتَمِعٍand one united شَعَّبَتهُYou divided it فَتَشَعَّباso it fell apart
For how many of the scattered have You gathered by Your power,
So how much adversity have you gathered with power
and how many of the united have You divided, so they fell apart.
And gathered and forked one it forked
