تُعَدِّدُrecounts نَفسيmy soul مِنfrom سُلَيمىSulayma عِدادَهاits recurring pangs
فَلَمso did not تَرقَcease weeping عَينيmy eye وَاستطيرَand was put to flight رُقادُهاits sleep
My soul recounts its recurring pangs from Sulayma.
So my eye has not ceased weeping, and its sleep has fled.
فَأَيسَرُso the least ماwhat تَلقىit suffers مِنَfrom الوَجدِpassion أَنَّهاthat it
مَعَamid الحُزنِsorrow مَغمُورٌsubmerged بِماءٍin water سَوادُهاits dark pupil
The least it suffers from passion is that
Amid sorrow, its dark pupil lies submerged in water.
ذَرُوفُstreaming with tears النَهارِby day حِينَwhen تَحميit grows hot مِنfrom البُكاweeping
كَثِيرٌabundant إِذاwhen جَنَّdescends الظَلامُdarkness اطِّرَادُهاits continuous flow
It streams with tears by day, when it burns from weeping;
Its flow is abundant when darkness falls.
عَلىwith عَبراتٍtears تَعتَرينيthat assail me لَوif أَنَّهاthey were
بِجانِبِbeside رَضوىRadwa أَنفَذَتهُwould pierce it through وِهادُهاtheir ravines
With tears that assail me—if they were
Beside Radwa, their ravines would pierce it through.
يُجافِينَthey keep away جَنبيmy side عضنfrom (apparent typo) فِراشيmy bed كَأَنَّهاas though they were
عَلَيهِupon it سُيُوفٌswords أَقلَقَتهُmade it restless حِدادُهاtheir sharp edges
They keep my side from my bed, as though they were
Swords upon it, their sharp edges leaving it restless.
إِذاwhen رامَتِsought الأَصعادَascent فيwithin الصَدرِthe breast زَفرَةٌa sigh
فَسَلمىthen Salma عَلىat بابِthe gate الفُؤادِof the heart رِدادُهاwhat turns it back
When a sigh seeks to rise within my breast,
Salma turns it back at the heart's gate.
وَلَوand if فارَقَتshe left جَوفيmy breast لَصادَفتُI would find راحَةًrelief
وَلَكِنَّماbut فيwithin الجَوفِthe breast مِنّيof me مُرادُهاher desired place
And if she left my breast, I would find relief,
Yet her desire is to be deep within me.
فَقُلتُso I said لِعَينيto my eye أَعمِديturn نَحوَtoward غَيرِهاsomeone other than her
بِنَفسيwith my soul وَعَينيand my eye حَيثُwhere تَهوىit longs قِيادُهاits reins
So I told my eye, 'Turn toward someone other than her,
Taking my soul'; yet my eye's reins lie where it longs.
فَزادَتso increased لِنَفسيfor my soul العَينُthe eye جُهداًanguish وَإِنَّماand only
إِلىto حُبِّthe love of سَلمىSalma حَيثُwherever كانَwas مَعادُهاits return
So my eye added to my soul's anguish; and only
To the love of Salma would it return, wherever it was.
وَكَيفَand how تُطِيقُcan endure الهَجرَestrangement نَفسٌa soul ضَعِيفَةٌfrail
بِكَفِّin the palm of سُلَيمىSulayma حَلُّهاits release وَصِفادُهاand its fetters
And how can a frail soul endure estrangement
When its release and its fetters lie in Sulayma's palm?
فَمنّىso show favor عَلَيَّto me اليَومَtoday سَلمىSalma وَسَدِّديand act rightly
وَخَيرُand the best of الأُمُورِaffairs حِينَwhen تُنمىare developed سَدادُهاtheir right course
So show me favor today, Salma, and do what is right;
And in affairs, as they develop, taking the right course is best.
فَماso not القَلبُthe heart عَنapart from سَلمىSalma بِجَلدٍsteadfast وَإِنeven if نَأَتshe is far away
وَشَرُّand the worst of قُلوبِthe hearts of الواجِدينَthose in love جِلادُهاtheir hardy ones
So my heart cannot bear separation from Salma, even if she is far away,
And the worst of lovers' hearts are the hardy ones.
فَلاso not النفسُthe soul تَرضىis content عَنin place of سُلَيمىSulayma بِخُلَّةٍwith an intimate companion
وَلَوeven if نَحَلَتwasted away نَفسيmy soul وَطالَand grew long بعادُهاher absence
So my soul accepts no other beloved in Sulayma's place,
Even if my soul wastes away and her absence lengthens,
حَياتيmy lifetime ماas long as غَنّىsing حَمائِمُdoves أَيكَةٍof a thicket
وَماand as long as أَحصَنَتsheltered عُصمُwhite-footed wild goats الفَلاةِof the desert صَمادُهاits crags
For all my life, as long as the doves of a thicket sing,
And as long as the desert's crags shelter its white-footed wild goats.
