أَضاعُونيthey have forsaken me وَأَيَّand what a فَتىًyoung man أَضاعُواthey have forsaken
لِيَومِfor a day of كَريهَةٍbattle وَسِدادِand the defense of ثَغرِa frontier
They have forsaken me—and what a young man they have forsaken,
fit for a day of battle and the defense of a frontier!
وَخَلَّونيand they left me لِمعتَرَكِto the battlefield of المَناياdeath
وَقَدand already شَرَعَتwere leveled أَسِنَّتُهاits spearheads لِنَحرىat my throat
And they left me to the battlefield of death,
its spearheads already leveled at my throat.
كَأَنّيas though I لَمnot أَكُنhad been فيهِمamong them وَسِيطاًa man of noble standing
وَلاnor لِيI have نِسبَةٌkinship فيin آلthe house of عَمرِوʿAmr
As though I had not been a man of noble standing among them,
nor had any kinship with the house of ʿAmr.
أُجَرَّرُI am dragged about فيin الجَوامِعshackles كُلَّevery يَومٍday
لِلّهِto God مَظلَمَتيthe wrong done to me وَصَبريand my patience
Every day I am dragged about in shackles.
Ah, to God belong the wrong I suffer and my patience!
عَسىmay المَلِكُthe King المُجِيبُthe one who answers لِمَنto whoever دَعاهُcalls upon him
يُنَجِّينيdeliver me فَيَعلَمَand so know كَيفَhow شُكريmy gratitude
May the King, who answers whoever calls upon him,
deliver me, and thus know the measure of my gratitude,
فَأَجزِىَso I may reward بِالكَرامَةِwith honor أَهلَthe people of وُديmy affection
وَأُورِثَand bequeath بِالضَغائِنِwith rancor أَهلَthe people of وِترىmy feud
so I may reward those I love with honor,
and bequeath rancor to those who have wronged me.
