My heart stirred after it had grown still,
at a flicker of lightning that shone from the direction of Yemen.
فلَاعتَرانيthen indeed seized me الشَوقُlonging لَمّاwhen خِلتُهُI glimpsed it
مَوهِناًlate at night قَدalready لَجَّpersisted وَهَناًduring the night وَالحَزَنand grief
Then longing indeed seized me when I glimpsed it,
late at night, as longing and grief persisted through the darkness.

And the pasture there—the pasture of al-ʿArj, extending to
the hillocks of al-Ahsa, on to al-Qasr—is worthy of longing.
تِلكَthose أَوطانٌhomes لِلَيلىfor Layla وَلَناand for us
ماnot يَهيجُstirs ذاthis الهَوىlove إِلّاexcept الوَطَنthe homeland
Those are Layla's homes and ours;
nothing stirs this love except one's homeland.

My companion spent the night reproaching me because he saw
the course of my tears—and tears have their own course.

I said, 'My friend, if you will not help,
then cease reproaching my love for Layla. For who

Then he desisted from that when I alerted him
to what we endure—he had not understood before.
