Was a visiting man at fault—

A chaste man who loved a shy, richly perfumed maiden?

She was delightful in conversation; when her neighbors came,

Her talk linked their footsteps, handspan by handspan.

My soul is checked by modesty and draws back,

Yet time and again it almost drives me to you.

Never is your name mentioned in passing conversation

But my heart grows light at it and takes flight.

Indeed, the reproachful women came early to blame me,

And I deemed most of their reproach malicious.

And they claimed that union with ʿAbda would bring

Disgrace upon me—but that is no disgrace.
