    The tribe’s encampment stirred sorrows

at Upper al-Rawna, and so made us weep.

When shall I be worn out, with two companions of mine

who take turns in longing at times?

They have been burdened with the like of what

my soul was made to bear of longing; and our loves

are diverse, so each complains of what ails him.

The Merciful does not dispel our lament.

In the days when my life was soft to the touch—

and the best of a man’s life is what is gentle—

until a spiteful, gloating enemy assailed us,

    turning love’s fire into many fires;

    وَصَرفُ هذا الدَهرِ أَبلانا

    and the turns of time, whose turns I had not feared;

and the turns of this age have worn us down.

Do not think, O Layl, if you have parted

from us, that distance has made us forget

your kindnesses, which you once bestowed

upon me when troubles befell at various times.

O Layl, I am speaking, so listen,

    and swearing oaths by God,

Lord of those who chant the pilgrim call toward His House,

on pilgrimage, on foot and mounted:

My heart, since I ceased to see you, has kept

making remembrance of you its concern.
