ياO مَنwho لِقَلبٍfor a heart شَديدِsevere in الهَمِّcare مَعمُودِsorely afflicted
وَنَومِand the sleep of عَينٍan eye إِذاwhen أَمسَيتُI reach evening مَحدُودِscant
O who will help a heart heavy with care and sorely stricken,
And an eye's sleep, so scant when evening finds me?
مُوَكَّلٍgiven over بِالصِباto youthful passion يَعصيdefies عَواذِلَهُits reproachers
لَهُfor it حُمَيدَةُHumayda رَهنٌa pledge غَيرُnot مَردُودِreturned
Given over to youthful passion, defying its reproachers,
Humayda is its pledge, never to be returned,
بِحاجَةٍwith longing ماas long as دَعَتcalls شَجواًmournfully مُطَوَّقَةٌa collared dove
فيin أَيكَةٍa grove بَينَamong أَغصانٍbranches بِتَغريدِwith birdsong
In longing, as long as a collared dove calls mournfully,
In a grove, among the branches, warbling.
إِذاwhen دَعَتshe calls هاجَstirs ذاthe bearer of الأَشجانِsorrows مَنطِقُهاher voice
كَأَنَّهاas though she were قَينَةٌa songstress غَنَّتsang عَلىto عُودِa lute
Whenever she calls, her voice stirs the sorrowful,
As though she were a songstress singing to a lute.
أَقُولُI say لَمّاwhen التَقَيناwe met وَهِيَand she was مُعرِضَةٌturning away
تَشكوcomplaining of الجَفاءَcoldness وَإِخلافَand the breaking of المَواعيدِpromises
I say, when we met and she was turning away,
Complaining of coldness and broken promises,
مِنّيfrom me إِلَيَّto me وَتَنسىand she forgets ذَنبَthe fault of رَبَّتِهاher mistress
إِذاwhen بَرَّحَتshe torments بِمُصابِone stricken in القَلبِthe heart مَعمُودِsorely afflicted
On my part, to me, forgetting her mistress's fault,
When she torments one heart-stricken and sorely afflicted.
وَقَدand indeed أُرىI suppose أَنَّهاthat she فيin القَولِspeech قَدalready أُمِرَتhas been instructed
إِذاwhen التَقَيناwe meet بِتَغليظٍwith harshness وَتَشديدِand severity
And I suspect she has already been instructed in her speech,
Whenever we meet, to be harsh and severe.
قُلتI said اِسمَعيlisten جَعَلتI have made نَفسيmyself الفِداءthe ransom لَكُمfor you all
مِنّيfrom me ولاand do not تُجمِعيcombine لَوميblaming me وَتَصريديand spurning me
I said: Listen—I have made myself your ransom—
To me; do not join blaming me with spurning me,
لِحلفَةٍfor an oath بَرَّةٍtruthful اللَهُGod يَعلَمُهاknows it
وَهَلand is there عَلَيَّagainst me سَبيلٌgrounds for blame بَعدَafter مَجهُوديmy utmost effort
For a truthful oath, which God knows.
And can I be blamed after doing my utmost?
أَوor سائليask تُخبَريyou will be told إِنif كُنتِyou are جاهِلَةًunaware

Or ask, and you will be told, if you do not know:
Does a freeborn man break a pledge once it is confirmed?
أَحلِفُI swear بِاللَهِby God أَيماناًoaths مُضاعَفَةًredoubled
فيon كُلِّevery يَومٍday مِنamong الأَيامِthe days مَشهُودِattended by crowds
I swear by God with redoubled oaths,
On every day that draws a gathering,
رَبِّLord of الحَجيجِthe pilgrims وَرَبِّand Lord of البُدنِthe sacrificial camels قَدalready وَجَبَتhave fallen slain

Lord of the pilgrims and the sacrificial camels now fallen slain,
And marked as lawful offerings and hung with garlands:

وَلاnor هَوىlove for غَيرِكُمanyone other than you ياO أُمَّmother of داوُدِDawud
No ʿumrah pilgrimage drove us toward your land,
Nor love for anyone but you, O Umm Dawud.

But for my love and my striving to bring you joy,
My descents to water and uphill journeys in al-Ghawr would be few;

Nor would I have braved, or forced my mount to cross,
The inner reaches of deserts whose landmarks are effaced.

بَعدَafter الإِلهِGod سِوىexcept أَمٍa fixed aim وَتَسديدِand sound guidance
When the caravan travels there by night, nothing guides them,
After God, except a fixed aim and a sure bearing.

There the dusky sandgrouse loses the way to its drinking place;
Their water is never approached by night.

Spring pastures of wide-eyed wild cattle and white gazelles, mingled with
Two flocks of ostriches there, like black-clad mourners.

When they appear before the coward of the band, they trouble
The coward's heart; after standing dazed, he sees nothing.

As though they were crosses in churches in al-Sham,
Which the Christians of Rum have brought out for the feast.
