    بَعدَ العَزاءِ وَبَعدَ الصَبرِ قَد غُلِبا

    The heart grew restless, and by evening reason had fled;

After solace and patience, it lay overcome.

And remembrance of Qurba stirred it after it had found solace,

And suffering returned to the heart, leaving it weary.

And Qurba made him endure night travel, though she never endured—

Qurba herself—a night's journey for him, nor any toil.

I said, when we met and she was turning away,

At the words of a slanderer who spun lies against us:

So I said: Do not turn away—my soul be your ransom—

For no reason, when we do nothing to anger you.

God knows I have loved no one as I love you,

O Qurb, among His creatures, non-Arab or Arab.

I had thought my passion for you, O Qarib,

Had vanished—until you appeared to us at al-Khayf.

When I stretched the heart's cord toward you,

The heart hastened toward what you desired and was drawn along.

By God, Qurba never drew near nor went far,

But his heart fluttered toward her in rapture.

Nor did a ring-necked dove ever voice her grief,

But tears welled in the eye and then poured down.

So if you are smitten with Qurba or consumed by grief, then indeed

Qurba and her peers have tormented you for ages.
