أَلاah! مَنwho لِعَينٍfor an eye لاnot تَزالُceases تَسِيلُflows with tears
وَعَينُand the eye المُحبِّthe lover المُستَهامِlove-stricken هَمُولُstreaming with tears
Ah, who will help an eye that never ceases to weep—
Alas! For the eye that continues to shed tears,
And the eye of the love-stricken lover streams with tears—
And the eye of the lover lost in longing.
وَطَرفٍand a gaze أَبىrefused ياO عَمرَʿAmra إِلّاexcept اتِّباعَكُمfollowing you all
وَقَلبٍand a heart أَبىrefused إِلّاexcept عَلَيكِaround you يَجُولُit roams
And a gaze that refuses, O ʿAmra, to do anything but follow you,
For the eyelid that refused but to follow you,
And a heart that refuses to roam except around you?
And the heart that refused but to roam towards you.
أَبيit refused شِقوةًout of misery أَنto يَرعَويcome to its senses وَهوَthough it مالَهُit has no
إِلَيهاto her أُرىI believe حَتّىuntil المَماتِdeath سَبيلُa path
In its misery it refused to come to its senses, though it has no
It refuses misery that it may pasture while owning it,
Path to her, I believe, until death.
I see that the path to it is death.
وَهاجَand stirred لَهُfor it حُبُّlove for البَخيلَةِthe miserly woman حُزنَهُits grief
وَقِدماًand from of old يُحَبُّis loved الشَيءُa thing وَهوَthough it is بَخيلُmiserly
And love for the miserly woman stirred its grief;
And the love of the miserly one provoked his grief,
And a thing has long been loved, though it is miserly.
Yet the foot loves the thing while he is stingy.
وَإِنّيand indeed I وَإِنحَلَّأتِand even if you have driven away قَلبيmy heart لَقائلٌshall surely speak
وَذَوand one burdened with البَثِّsorrow يَعنيهِtroubles him الهَوىlove فَيَقُولُand so he speaks
And I, even if you have driven my heart away, shall surely speak—
And if my heart is ripped apart, I would say -
And one burdened with sorrow is troubled by love, and so speaks:
While the separater means the love so he says:
حَبَستِyou detained هَداكِmay He guide you اللَهُGod قَلبيmy heart لِحَقِّهِfor its due
وَتَقضيand pay نِساءٌwomen ماwhat لَهُنَّthey have قَليلُlittle
You have held my heart captive over its due—may God guide you—
"God has made my heart stick to His truth,
While women who have little pay what is due.
While women fulfill what is little for them."
وَلَوand if شاءَwished قَلبيmy heart باعَtraded with غَيرَكِsomeone other than you فَاِقتَضىand collected its due
وَلَكِنَّهُbut it يَأَبىrefuses وَأَنتِand you مَطُولُalways delaying payment
And if my heart wished, it would trade with another and collect its due;
And if my heart had wanted, it would have sold others, but
But it refuses, and you keep delaying payment.
It refuses while you are long (lived).
وَإِنَّand indeed إِنصِرافيmy turning away عَنكِfrom you لاnot تُنقِصينَyou lessen ليfor me
مِنَof الحَقِّthe rightful due شَيئاًanything فَاعلَميso know لِثَقِيلُtruly burdensome
And my turning away from you, while you lessen nothing
And my turning away from you does not
Of my due—know this—is truly hard.
Diminish anything of the truth from me, so know that it is heavy (hard).
يَقُولُsay نِساءٌwomen حُبُّlove for عَمرَةَʿAmra شَفَّنيhas wasted me
زَعَمنَthey claimed وَفيand in جِسميmy body لِذاكَbecause of that نُحُولُemaciation
Women say that love for ʿAmra has wasted me;
Women say Umarah's love healed me,
So they claim, and my body is thin because of that.
They claimed, and in my body there is emaciation from that.
وَوَاللَهِand by God ماnot أَحبَبتُهاI loved her حُبَّa love of رِيبَةٍill intent
وَلَكنَّماbut rather ذاكَthat الحُبابُpassion قَتُولdeadly
And by God, I did not love her with a love of ill intent;
By God, I did not love her with doubtful love,
But that passion is deadly.
But that love is lethal.
دَعَتcalled قَلبَهُhis heart عَينٌan eye إِلَيهاto her مَشُومَةٌill-omened
عَلَيهِfor him وَعَينٌand an eye لِلفُؤاذِfor the heart دَليلُa guide
An eye called his heart to her, ill-omened
An eye with bad omen called his heart to it,
For him; and an eye is the heart's guide.
At it, and an eye guiding to hair-tips.
لَدىby الجَمرَةِthe Jamra الوُسطىmiddle أَصيلاًin late afternoon وَحَولَهاand around her

By the Middle Jamra, late in the afternoon, and around her were
At the middle ember, noble, and around it
Delicate, wide-eyed women, lovely in their coquetry.
Young maidens, houris, their beauty enticing.
تَكَنَّفنَهاthey surrounded her مِنfrom كُلِّevery شِقٍّside كَأَنَّهاas though she were

They surrounded her on every side, as though she were
They surrounded it from every side, as if it
A summer cloud that clears and shifts.
Were a summer cloud, unveiling and folding.
إِذاwhen ضَرَبَتshe cast aside بِالبُردِwith the mantle مِنfrom دُونِbefore وَجهِهاher face
تَلالاgleamed أَحَمُّdark of المُقلَتَينِthe two eyes أَسِيلُsmooth-cheeked
When she casts the mantle away from before her face,
If she hits with coolness from beneath her face,
A smooth-cheeked, dark-eyed face gleams,
Hillocks, the black of the two eyes more black.
عَلىupon جِيدِthe neck أَدماءٍa white gazelle مِنَamong الوَحشِwild animals حُرَّةٍnoble
لَهاshe has نَظَرٌa gaze يُبليwears out المَشُوقَthe yearning lover كَلِيلُlanguid
Upon the neck of a noble, white wild gazelle;
On a neck from the wild animals, smooth
Hers is a languid gaze that wears the yearning lover out.
Having a glance that wears out the pining lover.
