نُcompletes 'the departing caravans' إِذwhen جاوَزنَthey passed beyond مُطَّلَحاMuṭṭalaḥ
Ah, did the departing caravans stir you
Alas! Have the departing companions agitated you
as they passed beyond Muṭṭalaḥ?
When they passed by the sloping valley?
نَعَمyes وَلِوَشكِand for the imminence of بَينِهِمِtheir parting
جَرىpassed لَكَfor you طائِرٌa bird سَنَحاcrossed from left to right
Yes—and with their parting so near,
Yes, and if not for the nearness between us
a bird crossed your path from left to right.
A bird would have flown for you in longing.
سَلَكنَthey traversed الخَبتَthe lowland مِنfrom رَكَكٍRakak
وَضَوءُand the light of الفَجرِdawn قَدalready وَضَحاbecame clear
They crossed the lowland from Rakak,
They treaded the rugged path from Raqqah
and dawn's light had grown clear.
As the light of dawn shone clearly.
فَمَنso whoever يَفرَحُrejoices بِبينِهِمِat their parting
فَغَيريthen someone other than me إِذwhen غَدَواthey set out in the morning فَرِحاrejoiced
Whoever rejoices at their parting—
So who but me rejoices at their separation?
then someone other than I rejoiced when they set out that morning.
For when they departed I was delighted.
فَهَزَّتthen she shook رَأسَهاher head عَجَباًin wonder
وَقالَتand she said مازِحٌa jester مَزَحاjested
Then she shook her head in wonder
She shook her head in wonderment
and said, "A jester has jested."
And jokingly said in jest:
فَياso, oh عَجَباًwhat wonder لِموقِفِناat our meeting
وَغَيَّبَand kept out of sight ثَمَّthere مَنwhoever كَشَحاbore ill will
So, how wondrous our meeting was,
"How strange is our stance!
with whoever bore ill will kept out of sight there!
He then hid, the one with curled hair."
تَبِعتُهُمُI followed them بِطَرفِwith the gaze of العَيthe eye (word continues)
نِcompletes 'the eye' حَتّىuntil قِيلَit was said ليto me اِفتُضِحاwas exposed
I followed them with my gaze
I followed them with my eyes
until I was told I had been exposed.
Until I was told: Do not expose yourself!
فَوَدَّعَthen bade farewell بَعضُناsome of us بَعضاًothers
وَكُلٌّand each one بِالهَوىof love صَرَحاspoke openly
Then we bade one another farewell,
Thus we bade farewell to each other
and each openly declared their love.
And each of us straightforwardly declared their love.
