O eye, gently! Were you not forbidden to gaze?

Lower your gaze; lower your darting sight.

Do not cast the heart, my eye, into a place of terror,

And so lead it in, then be unable afterward to bring it out.

You led it toward Layla some time before this,

So you neither escaped unscathed nor were congratulated on victory.

Your tears have not dried to this day, from grief

From remembering her; and the heart was stirred by memories.

She and Ḥuṣayn kept hailing her

As a wild-ox calf, with wide-eyed wild cows around it,

Henna-dyed, gleaming beneath its gauze canopy,

As lightning's flash gleams amid banks of cloud.

I came seeking, desiring reward, on the lesser pilgrimage,

And one like her had left no pilgrim any virtue

Before me; when I reached the embankment, I was seen

By a white gazelle that shot me from the hunting blinds and did not miss the vital spot.
