Al-Ḥuzm stands empty of Ẓulaymah's people,
More determined than the night’s darkness, grief
and al-Ghamratān; al-Khaṭm has grown desolate,
Two gloomy clouds, with scowling face
فَجَنُوبُand the south of أَثبِرَةٍAthbirah فَمَلحَدُهاand its sloping flank
فَالسِدرَتانِand the two lote trees فَماand whatever حَوىcontained دَسمُDasm
and the south of Athbirah and its sloping flank,
Then the breasts of a camel long since milked; no nourishment left behind
and the two lote trees and all that Dasm holds.
Two jujube trees, but no sweetness within
وَبماand often أَرىI see شَخصاًa figure بِهِin it حَسَناًbeautiful

فيamong القَومِthe people إِذwhen حَيَّتكُمُshe greeted you all نُعمُNuʿm
And often I would see a lovely figure there,
When I see a person of beauty among the tribe
among the people, when Nuʿm greeted you,
As you are greeted, blessings abound
إِذwhen وُدُّهاher affection صافٍpure وَرُؤيَتُهاand seeing her
أَمنِيَّةٌa cherished wish وَكَلامُهاand her speech غُنمُa boon
when her affection was pure, and seeing her
For her affection is pure, and to see her
was a cherished wish, and her speech a boon.
A wish fulfilled, her words reward

Slender-waisted, full-fleshed where her anklet rests,
Graceful, though unsteady her gait
full-hipped, with no bones jutting out;
Feeble, her body slight of frame
خُمصانَةٌslim-bellied قَلِقٌloose and shifting مُوَشِّحُهاher sash

slim-bellied, her sash hangs loose,
Bashful and restless, her gown wraps her
soft with youth, her neck sinews firm as bone.
The vigor of youth, her bones slim
وَكَأنَّand as though غالِيَةًa rich perfume تُباشِرُهاtouches her skin

And it is as though a rich perfume touches her skin
As if a slave girl caresses her
beneath her clothes when the star shines clear.
Beneath clothes, when stars shine bright
أَظُلَيمُO Ẓulaym إِنَّindeed مُصابَكُمyour harming رَجُلاًa man
أَهدىoffered السَلامَpeace تَحِيَّةًas a greeting ظُلمُinjustice
O Ẓulaym, surely your harming a man
O night, your loss is a man
who offered peace as a greeting is injustice.
Who brought peace, greetings in the darkness
أَقصَيتِهِyou drove him away وَأَرادَand he wanted سِلمَكُمُpeace with you all
فَليَهِنهِso may it gladden him إِذsince جاءَكِhe came to you السِلمَpeace
You drove him away, though he sought peace with you;
You dismissed him, though he sought your safety
so may peace gladden him, since he came to you.
So let him be, when peace he conveyed
