O my two reproachers, do not reproach me today.
O you who reproach me today, do not reproach,
Go your ways, for tomorrow I shall set out at dawn,
For tomorrow I will be gone.

if God wills it; then leave.
If God wills it, then be gone,
You two will not accompany me to the end of al-Musnad.
You will not accompany me to the final resting place.
لاdoes not يَبتَغيseek الواجِدُthe grieving man مِثليlike me أَخاًa brother
إِذاif أَخُوthe brother of الواجِدِthe grieving man لَمdid not يُسعِدِgive support
A grieving man like me seeks no brother,
The finder does not desire a brother like me,
if the grieving man's brother gives him no support
When the brother of the finder does not bring joy.
فيin الحُزنِsorrow إِنif نابَbefell الفَتىthe young man حُزنُهُhis grief

وَصاحِبُand the companion of المَرءِthe man بِهِby him مُقتَدِtaking an example
in sorrow, when a young man is overtaken by his grief;
In sorrow, if a young man's sorrow passes him by,
and a man's companion follows his example.
And the man's companion is with him, imitated.

Qarn and Khaym recalled to me there
It reminds me of a painful, sad time,
what had slipped away from my life, so I could not sleep,
That did not cease to trouble my life, so I did not rest,

Except a little - would that it had not been
anything at all—like the sleep of a fearful, sore-eyed man.
Anything - like the sleep of the anxious insomniac.

And the tribe's campsite there has been effaced,
The abode of the living through it is ruined,
save the trace of the tent-trench and the hearth,
Except the courtyards and fireplaces.

in the water-bearing ravine, whose torrent
By the valley with the torrent whose flood
runs behind the black knoll,
Flows behind the blackened hills,

On the right of the one who passed by it accusing
and to the left of the upland traveler heading toward Najd,
And on the left of the resolute seated one,

when we were youth's close companions, and love
When we were two captives of youth and desire
in me and in Asma had not run dry.
Never ending from me and from Asma.

I endure the night as though, within it, I were
I suffer the night as if I were in it
a trapper keeping watch at a lookout.
An observer lying in wait in an observatory.

And the women's gathering, after slumber,
And the gathering of the women after the wine vessels
was in a meadow filled with dew-fresh daisies.
In a garden with thickets of reeds,

They came out walking together, late at night,
They went out walking together gently
with the gait of desert oryx, toward a rendezvous
Walking with the gait of an oryx to the trysting-place

between me and them, while sleep had closed
From me and from them, and drowsiness has closed
the eyes of spiteful enviers, leaving us unwatched.
Our eyes from the envious spying.

Among them was a dark-eyed beauty, whose appearance
Among them a beauty whose form
was like the full moon conjoined with auspicious stars.
Is like the full moon joined with good fortune,

Full-rounded in both calves, tender and delicate,
Swaying of leg, graced,
like a branch that has bent but has not been broken.
Like a branch leaning and not yet ripe.
