أَهاجَكَhas it stirred you? رَبعٌa campsite عَفاhas faded away مُخلِقُweatherworn
نَعَمyes فَفُؤادُكَso your heart مثستَغلِقُlocked fast (apparent misspelling)
Has a faded, weatherworn campsite stirred you?
A breeze stirred up a quarter that was gentle and benign
Yes—your heart is locked fast,
Yes, so your heart is tightly shut
لِذِكرِكَbecause of your remembrance مَنthe one who قَدalready نَأَتhas grown distant دارُهُhis dwelling
وَقَلبُكَand your heart فيin إِثرِهِhis wake مُوثَقُbound fast
Because you remember one whose dwelling lies far away,
For the one who's home is far away, you recall
And your heart is bound fast in their wake.
And your heart is tied to their remembrance
يُذَكِّرُنيit reminds me الدَهرَever ماwhat قَدalready مَضىhas passed
مِنَof العَيشِlife فَالعَينُso the eye تَغرَورِقُbrims with tears
It ever reminds me of what has passed
Time reminds me of times gone by
Of life, and my eye brims with tears.
Of a life once lived, and so tears well up in my eyes
لَياليَnights أَهليmy kin وَأَهلُand the kin of الَّتيshe who
دُمُوعيmy tears لِذِكرَتِهاat the memory of her تَسبِقُrush ahead
The nights when my kin and the kin of the woman
Nights with my family and with her family
At whose memory my tears rush forth
My tears precede in remembrance of them
خَلِيطانِtwo mingled groups مَحضَرُناour gathering-place وَاحِدٌone
وَحَبلُand the cord المَوَدَّةِaffection لاnot يَخلُقُwears out
Were two mingled groups, our gathering-place one,
Our dwelling place is one and the same
And the cord of affection did not wear out.
And the rope of affection does not wear out
لَناfor us وَلهندٍand for Hind بِبَطنِin the valley-bed of العَقيal-ʿAqīq (name begins here)
قِcompletion of al-ʿAqīq مُبدىًan open-country camp وَمَنزِلُهُand its site مُونِقُdelightful
For us and for Hind, in the valley-bed of al-ʿAqīq,
For us and for Hind is the place at the ridge of Al-'Aqiq
Was an open-country camp, its site delightful.
An abode and dwelling serene
فَإِنso if يَكُbe ذاكَthat الزَمانُtime اِنقَضىhas ended
وَحَبلُكَand your cord مِنfrom حَبلِهاher cord مُطلَقُloosed
So if that time has come to an end,
If that time has passed away
And your cord is loosed from hers,
And your rope from hers comes untied
فَقَدthen indeed عِشتُI lived فِيماin what مَضىhas passed خِدنَهاher intimate companion
لَياليnights الوِصالُloving union بِهاin them (the nights) يَعنقُhastens along
Yet I lived in days gone by as her intimate companion,
Then I have lived, in times gone by, her intimacy
On nights when union sped apace.
Nights of union with her I embrace
