بنفسيwith my life (as your ransom) بينexplain ليto me متىwhen أنتyou راجعٌreturning
Whatever things I may forget, I do not forget her words:
I have not forgotten her words amidst other things
“I would ransom you with my life—tell me, when will you return?”
She asked me herself when will you return
فقلتso I said لهاto her واللَهby God ماnot منany (emphasizing negation) مسافرtraveler
يحيطencompasses لهfor him علمُknowledge بماof what اللَهGod صانعُwill do
So I told her, “By God, no traveler
I said to her, by God, no traveler
can fully know what God will do.”
Knows what God has planned

Then she said, while tears from her eye washed down her kohl:
She said, with tears flowing down her kohl eyelids
“You have left my heart frightened by parting.”
You left my heart wandering and restless

وأقبلand came forth بالكحلwith kohl السحيقfinely ground المدامعُthe tear ducts

And she cast the veil over her mouth and turned away,
She drew her veil over her mouth and turned away
and her tear ducts streamed with finely ground kohl.
As copious tears flowed from her kohl-rimmed eyes
