فأبلِغso convey مالكاًMālik عَنيfrom me رسولاًa message
فأبلِغ مالكاً عَني رسولاً
وماand what يغنيavails الرسولُthe message إليكto you مالِO Mālik
وما يغني الرسولُ إليك مالِ
So convey to Mālik a message from me.
Send word to her through a messenger,
Yet what use is a message to you, Mālik?
Though of what avail a messenger to thee!
تخادعناyou try to deceive us وتوعدُناand threaten us رويداًeasy now
تخادعنا وتوعدُنا رويداً
كدأبlike the habit of الذئبthe wolf يأدlies in wait وللغزالِfor the gazelle (و apparently completes يأدو)
كدأب الذئب يأد وللغزالِ
You try to deceive us and threaten us—easy now—
Thou dup'st and threaten'st us by slow degrees,
Like the wolf's way of lying in wait for the gazelle.
Like habits of the wolf toward the gazelle.
فلاso do not تَفعَلdo فإنfor indeed أخاكyour brother جلدٌsteadfast
فلا تَفعَل فإن أخاك جلدٌ
علىamid العزّاءdire hardship فيهاin it ذوpossessing احتيالresourcefulness
على العزّاء فيها ذو احتيال
So do not do this, for your brother is steadfast
Yet do no such! Thy brother's made of steel,
In dire hardship, resourceful in facing it.
Full skilled in war's capricious stratagems.
وأناand we سَوفshall نَجعلُwe place مولييناour two allies
وأنا سَوف نَجعلُ موليينا
مكانin the place of الكليتينthe two kidneys منrelative to الطحالِthe spleen
مكان الكليتين من الطحالِ
And we shall place our two allies
Soon we'll appoint our lord in thy soul's stead,
Where the two kidneys stand in relation to the spleen.
To lodge within thy ribs instead of heart!
ونغنيand we suffice فيin الحوادثcalamities عنin place of أخيناour brother
ونغني في الحوادث عن أخينا
كماjust as تغنيsuffices اليمينُthe right hand عنin place of الشمالِthe left hand
كما تغني اليمينُ عن الشمالِ
And in calamities we shall stand in for our brother,
And we shall do without our brother's aid,
As the right hand stands in for the left.
As well as right without assistance left.
