وقدand already تَرقرقquivered ماءthe moisture of العينthe eye اوor دمعاflowed in tears
Ah, how I long for her who rose to bid me farewell,
O pilgrim, what is it that came to bid me farewell
while moisture trembled in her eye—or flowed as tears.
With tears welling up in the eyes or weeping
تقولshe says إذاwhen أيقَنتshe became certain منيfrom me بمعصيةof disobedience
لقدindeed عَرضتُI offered عليكto you النصحadvice لوif only نفعاit availed
She says, when sure I will disobey:
You say that if you were convinced of my disobedience
"I have offered you counsel—if only it would help."
I offered you advice even if it was of no use
ألمhave you not تَرىyou seen أنthat دهراًtime قدindeed تغيرhas changed بيfor me
فلمyet not ترىyou saw فَرحاًjoy منيfrom me ولاnor جزعاdismay
Have you not seen how time has changed my lot,
Have you not seen that time has changed against me
yet you saw neither joy nor dismay in me?
You have seen from me neither joy nor sorrow
فإنfor if هلكتُI perish وريبُand the misfortunes of الدهرtime متلفةٌdeadly
فلمthen not أكنI was عاجزاًhelpless نكساًbase ولاnor ورعاtimid
For if I perish—and time's misfortunes are deadly—
If I perish and the days of time are destructive
I shall not have been helpless, base, or fainthearted.
I was not helpless, dejected, or pious
وإنand if بقيتI survive فجَلدُthen I am hardy ذوa man of مواطحةٍhead-on combat
أسقيI give to drink العدوthe enemy نقيعan infusion of السمِّpoison والسلَعاand bitter salaʿ-plant
And if I survive, I am hardy, a man who locks horns;
And if I remain, I am one who plunges into battles
I give the enemy steeped poison and bitter salaʿ to drink.
I make the enemy drink poison and deadly mixtures
ماnever سُدَّwas blocked مُطَّلعٌan ascent ضاقتgrew narrow ثنيَّتُهits mountain pass
إلاbut وجدتُI found وراءbeyond الضيقthe narrow place مطلَعاa way up
No ascent was ever blocked, its mountain pass narrowed,
No rising was ever blocked, though the path was narrow
but I found a way up beyond the narrow place.
Except I found beyond the narrowness a rising
ولاnor رميتُI hurled علىat خَصمٍan opponent بقارعةwith a crushing blow
إلاbut منيتُI was confronted بخصمwith an opponent فرbared his teeth ليat me جَذعاyoung and vigorous
Nor did I hurl a crushing blow at an opponent,
And I have never attacked a foe suddenly
but I met a rival who bared his teeth at me, young and strong.
Except I intended with the foe who fled from me a prey

يخفيhe conceals عداوتهhis enmity ألاbecause not يرىhe sees طَمعاhope of gain
How many an enemy, harboring rancor, treats me courteously,
How many enemies, whose enmity I bear
concealing his enmity because he sees no opening.
Conceal their hatred, not seeing in me covetousness
حملتI bore منهfrom him علىunder عوراءa shameful affront طائشةreckless
لمnot أسهُI was heedless عنهاof it ولمand not أكثرI made much لهاover it فَزعاalarm
I bore a reckless, shameful affront from him;
I have borne from him such wayward, rash ones
I was not heedless of it, nor greatly alarmed by it.
I did not forget them and did not increase for them dismay
فكمand how often تورعتُI held back عنfrom مولىa kinsman تعرضset himself ليagainst me

And how often I held back from a kinsman who challenged me;
So how many times I refrained from a master who turned against me
I spared him; otherwise I would have worn him down to limping.
I avoided him, even if I did not torment him

تسائلshe asks المعشرthe company الأعداءthe enemies ماwhat صنعاhe did
For I am forever on the brink of destruction,
Since I do not cease to be in deadly places
while she asks the enemy band, "What has he done?"
Where the group of enemies ask one another what he has done
