And no thirsty creatures that circled for a day and a night
Wandering endlessly night and day
at the water, approaching the rods, bending low,
Upon the water, shrouding the reeds,

seeing the water’s surface, with death between them and it,
They see but bubbles on the surface, death beneath,
and gazing toward it with their eyes,
Yet with eager eyes they gaze below.

ولا هنَّ من بَردِ الحياضِ داون
circling in thirst, not leaving it for another place,
Ceaselessly roaming with no destination,
nor near the coolness of the pools,
Unaffected by the chill of ice,
بأكثرany greater منيthan me فرطintensity of شوقٍlonging وغلَّةٍand burning thirst
بأكثر مني فرط شوقٍ وغلَّةٍ

إليك ولكنَّ العَدُوَّ عداني
feel more intense longing and burning thirst than I
More ardently than I, crazed with yearning,
for you—but the enemy has kept me away.
Do I long for you, but the foe thwarts me.
