لمّاwhen رأيتُI saw الذنوبَthe sins جلَّتwere too grave
لمّا رأيتُ الذنوبَ جلَّت
عنbeyond المُجازاةِrequital بالعِقابِwith punishment
عن المُجازاةِ بالعِقابِ
When I saw the sins were too grave
When I saw many sins being committed,
to be requited with punishment,
I refrained from punishing,
جعَلتُI made فيهin his case العقابَthe punishment عفواًa pardon
جعَلتُ فيه العقابَ عفواً
أقسىharsher منَthan الضَّربِstriking للرِّقابِto the necks
أقسى منَ الضَّربِ للرِّقابِ
I made the punishment in his case a pardon,
And instead of punishment, I forgave,
harsher than blows to the necks.
Which was more difficult than striking necks.
