أشعارُ عبدِ بني الحَسحاسِ قُمنَ له
عندin الفخارِboasting مقامَin place of الأصلِlineage والورقِand silver
عند الفخارِ مقامَ الأصلِ والورقِ
The poems of the slave of Banu al-Ḥasḥās served him
The poems of Abd Bani Al-Haschas have a standing for him
In boasting, in place of lineage and silver.
Like the trunk and branches have a standing for clay
إنif كنتُI am عبداًa slave فنفسيthen my soul حُرَّةٌfree كرَماًin nobility
إن كنتُ عبداً فنفسي حُرَّةٌ كرَماً
أوor أسودَblack الجلدِof skin إنيindeed I am أبيضُwhite الخُلُقِin character
أو أسودَ الجلدِ إني أبيضُ الخُلُقِ
If I am a slave, my soul is free in nobility;
If I am a slave, my soul is free and generous
Or if my skin is black, I am indeed white in character.
Even if my skin is black, my morals are white
