To the finest imam, sprung from the finest stock,

And the finest to ascend a pulpit's timbers,

And heir to the knowledge and dominion of those before him—

And that is al-Ma'mun—from Umm Ja'far—

I wrote as tears streamed from my eye,

To you, my cousin, from my eyelids and eye socket.

I was bereaved of the one closest to you in kinship,

And who was my very soul—so my endurance failed.

Tahir came—may God not purify Tahir!

For Tahir is not pure in his conduct.

So he brought me out, my face unveiled and my head bare,

And gave my wealth over to plunder and laid waste to my homes.

What I have endured is grievous to Harun,

And what befell me from a one-eyed man, deficient in form.

Remember, Commander of the Faithful, my kinship with you.

May I be your ransom, mindful kinsman!

So if what he did was in obedience to an order you gave,

I would patiently bear a command from a mighty ruler.

But if it was otherwise, then, without dispute,

It rests with you, Commander of the Faithful—so change it.
