So do not ask us for your sword; indeed, your sword
So ask not for the sword that failed its lord,
was lost, and its owner cast it away in terror.
And which the frightened cast aside in fear.

Ask the people of Egypt about our sister's son's arms:
Ask you the folk of Egypt of the arms
for they robbed him of his sword and his possessions.
Of our niece's son, which they robbed him of,

The lord of Khaybar and Badr's day when fled

and the first to pray, and one whose manner was gentle;
The first to pray, whose stature none could match.

In truth, God's messenger's defender he,
Who, then, can come near him, and who can approach him?
His neighbor. Who contends or compares with him?
عَلِيُّAli وَلِيُّthe friend of اللَهِGod أَظهَرَmade manifest دينَهُHis religion
عَلِيُّ وَلِيُّ اللَهِ أَظهَرَ دينَهُ
وَأَنتَand you مَعَwith الأَشقَينَthe most wretched فيماin what تُحارِبُهyou fight him

Ali, God's friend, made His religion manifest,
Ali, God's regent, his religion spread,
and you are with the most wretched in fighting him.
While you the wretched fought him and opposed.

فَما لَكَ فينا مِن حَميمٍ تُعاتِبُه
And you are a man from the people of Safwa, far from home,
An eager horseman of Safwan you came,
so you have no close friend among us to reproach.
No friend or confidant to bandy words with.

And the Most Merciful has revealed that you are a transgressor,
The Compassionate revealed you were corrupt,
so you have no share in Islam to claim.
No part have you in Islam to dispute.

For I am come with squadrons, I am come
whose sound and clamor deafen the keen-eared.
With trumpets braying and with mail coats gleaming.
