    O Amr, enough of deceit and whisperings!

    Go, then: ignorance's malady has no healer,

    Except repeated thrusts into your throats,

    That grieve souls and cure the head's conceit.

    This is the medicine that cures your band,

    Until you obey Ali and Ibn Abbas.

    As for Ali, God has indeed favored him

    Through the merit of one whose honor towers above mankind.

    أَو تَبعَثوها فَإِنّا غَيرُ أَنكاسِ

    If you hobble war, we too shall keep it hobbled and subdued;

    Or if you rouse it, we are no weaklings.

    From us and from you, amid its dust, has come

    What cannot be undone; all are exposed to war's fury.

    هَذا بِهَذا وَما بِالحَقِّ مِن باسِ

    Iraq's slain are offset by the slain of Syria;

    This for that, and there is no harm in justice.

    May God not bless Egypt! It has surely brought

    Evil, and your share of it is a sip from the cup.

    O Amr, you are bare of its burdens,

    By the prancing camels—and clad in those of Judgment Day.
