    Would that, instead of the bees of their Basra, I had

    The desert’s ramth, qaysum, and alyud.

    تأوي إليك بهنّ الأعبد السود

    Nothing is finer than sheep and my camels;

    Black slaves return to you with them.

    And than a tent, a spear, and a horse,

    Its tether held by a stake driven firmly inside the tent.

    This is life—not date palms on a farm,

    At which your pollination and manuring are aimed.

    لا نظمت مثل ذا القول المناشيد

    You have become the camel-driver of all people, every one of them;

    May minstrels never compose words like these.
