أجل في العيش من علق وقوّاد
Whoever pimps rules; among all people there is none
More exalted in life than a catamite and a pimp.
قدsurely يعلمknow العلقthe catamite والوزانand al-Wazzan (the weigher) أنهماthat they both
قد يعلم العلق والوزان أنهما
فيin ظلthe shade of رفقgentleness وتسديدand sound direction وإرشادand guidance
في ظل رفق وتسديد وإرشاد
The catamite and al-Wazzan surely know that they
Are in the shade of gentleness, sound direction, and guidance.
سعيتI strove بالرفقwith gentleness فيin تأليفuniting شملهماtheir company
سعيت بالرفق في تأليف شملهما
واستبدلاand they both exchanged بالتدانيin place of closeness قبحthe ugliness of إبعادestrangement
واستبدلا بالتداني قبح إبعاد
I strove gently to bring the two of them together,
And they traded closeness for the ugliness of estrangement.
