Who will be my protector from the sons of an age
Who will be my protector from a people
Who have made me a target, even when I draw near to them?
Who made me a target though I drew near to them

I complain to God of what I suffer from a group of men
I complain to God of the hostility I faced
Who deem my learning senile nonsense whenever I discuss it with them.
They see my knowledge as senility when I speak of it

If I utter a wise saying, their spokesman says,
If I say a wise saying, they say its speaker
“Luqman made him his successor!”
Made Luqman his successor after him

Whenever I cite an illustration drawn from insight and philosophy,
Whenever I reflect with wisdom and philosophy
Out of ignorance, they revile Hippocrates and what he expounded.
They insult Hippocrates out of ignorance without describing him

Whenever I keep myself free of fault and defilement,
Whenever I shun a fault or impurity
They say, “He has put on airs,” or, “He has shown us conceit.”
They say I'm lost or I'm showing arrogance

And if an abundant blessing from God appears,
And if I see a complete blessing from God
Or they see some of God's beneficence toward me,
Or they see a glimpse of God's work for me

They seek out a fault in me and turn, in envy,
They ascribe a fault to me and are envious
To exposing my disgrace and sparing me no sorrow.
Revealing my disgrace but not pitying me

Neither do they respect my distance from them, nor does my bond
Neither distance from them nor my connection
With them save me from the abuse of whoever cries out.

My wish is to escape people unharmed, yet they
I wish safety from people while they
Have disparaged the great, the noble, and those of old.
Criticized the great, the noble, and the ancestors

منin سالفbygone الدهرtime سنّواthey established الفضلvirtue والشرفاand honor
May God never cast away a people among whom I lived
God does not distance a people from whom I was
In days gone by; they made virtue and honor a tradition.
Among the elite of times gone by, of virtue and nobility

Whenever they saw a lapse, they lowered their eyelids;
When they see a slip, they lower their gazes
And if they saw a slip, they voiced no disdain.
And when they see a stumble, they do not speak of it

And if they saw a virtue, they revealed it and rejoiced—
And when they see good, they mention it and rejoice
True brothers to anyone who knew their character.
Brothers of truthfulness, their character is known

This is an age of people among whom I have come to live:
This is an era of people among whom I am
I have met no full moon; if I meet one, it is eclipsed.
Not encountering excellence, rather eclipses if I meet it
