Time has two states: gathering and parting.

And death's decree cannot be forestalled.

And ever-renewed day and night, in their recurring cycles,

Bring good fortune and ill, with certainty and accord.

Nothing is more wondrous than their two states, for they

Do not wear out, while every created being wears away.

My abasement is before God, not men, as I seek

My sustenance, like a lover's abasement before the beloved.

Yet they are intent on denying me, despite my ardor

And my sound knowledge of all manner of tricks.

And I did not settle in Baghdad, opening

The door to a livelihood, out of ignorance or folly.

Rather, the crookedness of both feet kept me from seeking

A means of livelihood by traveling west and east.

Baghdad is a pleasant abode for the wealthy,

And for the penniless, an abode of humiliation and distress.

I dwelt there, in the land of al-Khuld, in a home

Of the house of Sasan, among a band of beggars.

During a time when the sky swore to us

That in that time we would never see the sun for certain.

So the clouds, because of my ill luck and misery, swore

Not to relent in distressing and hindering me.

An abode of bliss—but its people have turned

From learning to frivolity and clapping.

I have ended up there, neglected among its dwellers,

As though I were a copy of the Qur'an in a heretic's house.
