وكلّand everyone بنكبتهاwith their affliction عارفُis familiar
وكلّ بنكبتها عارفُ
Three things wear out the heart,
Three things that sadden the heart
and everyone knows the misery they bring:
And for each its misfortune I know

بكاءُ الصبيّ لدى ليلةٍ
وقرضand the gnawing الفويرةthe little mouse والواكفand dripping water
وقرض الفويرة والواكف

A child's crying in the night
the little mouse's gnawing, and dripping water.

And a fourth is the mother of sorrows;

عجوزٌ تباكرني بالنقار
ويأتيand comes الظلامdarkness فتستأنفُso she begins again

An old woman rebukes me with her nagging
and when darkness comes, she begins again.
And darkness comes and resumes
