They saw me rushing in haste,

They saw me hastening

racing, or running at something like the runners’ pace.

To attend, or pursue civilization's quest,

فقالوا تخطّيتَ أفعالكم

فقالوا تخطّيتَ أفعالكم

إلى باعةِ التمر والبريهار

إلى باعةِ التمر والبريهار

So they said, “You have gone beyond your deeds

So said, "You have surpassed your deeds

to the sellers of dates and barīhār.”

To the date and pepper sellers."

فقلت أبو حفص المستشار

فقلت أبو حفص المستشار

صحيح الأمانة وافي العذار

I said, “Abu Hafs, the adviser,

So I said, "Abu Hafs the advisor

is trustworthy, with full cheek-whiskers;

Is honest and true in speech,

ولكنه يعتني بالحمام

ولكنه يعتني بالحمام

ويجلس للبيع ربع النهار

ويجلس للبيع ربع النهار

but he tends the pigeons

Yet he tends to his pigeons

and sits to sell for a quarter of the day.”

And sits selling a quarter the day."
