لامواthey blamed الحسودthe envier وأكثرواand spoke abundantly فيin ذمّهdisparaging him
قلتI said الحسودthe envier أحقّmore deserving بالمدحof praise
They blamed the envier and spoke at length in condemnation of him.
Blame the envious and denounce them often
I said: the envier is more deserving of praise.
I say the envious deserve praise
إنindeed الحسودthe envier هوhe الدليلthe proof علىof الغنىwealth
هلis there? حاسدan envier إلاexcept علىfor الريحthe wind
Indeed, the envier is the proof of wealth.
For the envious are proof of wealth
Is anyone envious of anything but the wind?
Does one envy anything but the wind?
فكماfor just as الحبيبthe beloved معwith الرقيبthe watcher كذاlikewise ترىyou see
حسدenvy الحسودof the envier مقارنaccompanying النجحsuccess
For just as the beloved is accompanied by a watcher, so you see
As the lover and the sentinel are together
the envier's envy accompanying success.
So too the envy of the envious accompanies success
هاتbring الغنىwealth وذرand leave الحسودthe envier وماand what بهails him
موتdeath الحسودof the envier ضنىwasting sickness منfrom القبحugliness
Bring wealth, and leave the envier and what ails him.
Bring forth wealth and ignore the envious, there is no good in them
The envier dies of wasting sickness born of ugliness.
The death of the envious is distasteful meanness
لاno خيرgood فيمنin one who لاnot يحسّدis envied فيfor غنىwealth
أوor فيfor تقىpiety ونهىand wisdom إذاwhen يضحىenters the morning
There is no good in one who is not envied for wealth,
No good in one who does not envy wealth
or for piety and wisdom as he enters the morning.
Or piety when the day breaks
هلhas? حاسدan envier حسدenvied الفقيرthe poor man علىfor القرىhospitality
أوor حاسدone who envies أحداanyone علىfor القبحugliness
Has any envier envied the poor man for his hospitality,
Does one envy the poor man his villages?
or has an envier envied anyone for ugliness?
Or envy anyone their ugliness?
كمmany a حاسدenvier أولاكgave you وجهa reason for تحفظcaution
منagainst شرّهhis evil فيin جانبthe realm of المزحjest
Many an envier has given you cause for caution
How many envious faces you've preserved
against his evil in the realm of jest,
From their evil with gentle mockery
فرماكthen he shot at you عنfrom قوسthe bow of العليلthe sick man تبرّماin vexation
كالمسريحlike one letting fly باسهمwith arrows of النصحcounsel
then shot at you from the sick man's bow in vexation,
So you pushed them from the bow of the feeble
like one letting fly with arrows of counsel.
Like a spine removed with care
