في سماح وفيّ لؤم

ما صحّ لي في الورى نديم

ما صحّ لي في الورى نديم

There is generosity in me, and baseness too.

With tolerant grace and blame

No boon companion among humankind has proved true to me.

None in this world proves a true friend to me

أشُحّ بالوصل عن لئيم

أشُحّ بالوصل عن لئيم

وهو على لؤمه ظلوم

وهو على لؤمه ظلوم

I withhold companionship from a base man.

Though I yearn for one who’d faithful be

And besides his baseness, he is a great wrongdoer.

While he in blame persists, unjustly mean

عاشرت خلقا على ضروبٍ

عاشرت خلقا على ضروبٍ

ما صحّ لي منهمُ كريم

ما صحّ لي منهمُ كريم

I have kept company with people of many kinds.

I've known all manner of humankind

No noble man among them has proved true to me.

Yet not one noble soul could I find
