النفسthe soul تمكرُplots بالإنسانagainst man تخدعهُdeceives him
النفس تمكرُ بالإنسان تخدعهُ
تريهshows him أنthat الذيthat which يهواهhe desires it مختارpreferred
تريه أن الذي يهواه مختار
The soul plots against man, deceiving him.
The soul deceives man, tricks him
It shows him that what he desires is to be preferred.
It makes him believe that what he desires is the best
ولوand if رآهاhe saw it بعينwith the eye of العيشlife خالفهاhe opposed it
ولو رآها بعين العيش خالفها
علىconcerning الهوىdesire ورأىand he saw مختارهاits choice عارa disgrace
على الهوى ورأى مختارها عار
And were he to see it with the eye of life, he would oppose it
If he saw it with the eye of experience unlike it
In matters of desire, and deem its choice a disgrace.
Saw the choice of his passion as disgrace
