القلب في لجج الهموم غريق
والصبرand patience ينقصdwindles واليقينand certainty يضيقnarrows
والصبر ينقص واليقين يضيق
The heart is drowning in the deep waters of sorrow.
The heart is drowning in seas of worries,
And patience dwindles, and certainty shrinks.
Patience is waning and certainty narrowing.
هجمتassailed عليّme معalong with المشيبgray hair حوادثmisfortunes
هجمت عليّ مع المشيب حوادث
هيthey للنفوسfor souls إلىto الوفاةdeath طريقa path
هي للنفوس إلى الوفاة طريق
Misfortunes assailed me with the coming of gray hair.
With old age came tribulations,
For souls, they are a path to death.
Leading the soul down the path of demise.
يالائميO you who blame me إنّيindeed I خلوتI secluded myself بوحدتيin my solitude
يالائمي إنّي خلوت بوحدتي
فيin صاحبa companion هوhe مؤنسone who comforts ورفيقand a friend
في صاحب هو مؤنس ورفيق
O my reproacher, I have withdrawn into my solitude,
Oh critic! I am alone with my solitude,
In the company of one who is a comfort and a friend.
With a companion who consoles and accompanies.
لاdo not تلحنيreproach me جرّبتI tested كلevery معاشرassociate
لا تلحني جرّبت كل معاشر
ماnot كلّevery مبتسمone who smiles إليكat you صديقُa friend
ما كلّ مبتسم إليك صديقُ
Do not reproach me; I have tested every associate.
Do not blame me, I have tried all company,
Not everyone who smiles at you is a friend.
Not every smiling face is a true friend.
