مضى أهل السماح وكنت فيهم
مكانthe place of الكحلkohl فيin عينthe eye of البصيرthe sighted person
مكان الكحل في عين البصير
The generous have passed away, and I was among them
The generous people are gone, and I was among them,
Like kohl in the eye of one who sees.
Like kohl in the eye of one with vision.
أبادهمannihilated them الزمانtime علىin اتفاقunison
أبادهم الزمان على اتفاق
فماso not يلويwaits الكبيرthe elder علىfor الصغيرthe younger
فما يلوي الكبير على الصغير
Time swept them all away together,
Time has destroyed them with its passing,
So the elder does not wait for the younger.
Not distinguishing elder from younger.
وخلفنيand left me behind الشقاءmisfortune علىamong أناسpeople
وخلفني الشقاء على أناس
تواصواurged one another بالتقاطعto sever ties والشرورand evils
تواصوا بالتقاطع والشرور
And misfortune left me behind among people
And misfortune was left to me among people
Who urged one another to sever ties and do evil.
Who deal in separation and evil.
فحسبهمso enough for them وحسبيand enough for me أنthat أراهمI look upon them
فحسبهم وحسبي أن أراهم
كماjust as نظرlooked الغنيّthe rich man إلىat الفقيرthe poor man
كما نظر الغنيّ إلى الفقير
So it is enough for them and for me that I look upon them
It is enough for them and me that I see them
As the rich man looks upon the poor.
As a rich man looks upon a pauper.
نشاarose أهلpeople of السقطbaseness فضعتand I was wasted فيهمamong them
نشا أهل السقط فضعت فيهم
ضياعthe wasting of الكحلkohl فيin عينthe eye of الضريرthe blind person
ضياع الكحل في عين الضرير
The base arose, and I was wasted among them,
The fallen people arose, so I was thrown among them,
Like kohl wasted in the eye of the blind.
Like a lost kohl stick in the eye of the blind.
